UCLA CLASS OF 2021 APPLICANT THREAD

@blountwil2 @tacanadian Out of state students are only eligible for federal aid which includes pell grants and loans. The only merit scholarships are UCLA Regents and Alumni scholarships. Emails will be sent inviting people to apply for Regents and alumni in early 2017. Regents is invite only and includes $2,000. The only way to get more money is to be in state and have demonstrated need above the $2,000. Alumni scholarships are open to everyone to apply but it is highly unlikely you will get it if you do not get the invite. An earlier post has admission rates for alumni scholarship invitees between 60-65%. Alumni scholarships are 4-5k per year renewable based on GPA. The statement above on only legacies getting aid and top 10/100,000 applicants is false. UCLA doesn’t know if you are a legacy or not and Regents is for the top .5ish% of applicants. If you are out of state be prepared to pay 50+ per year.

My bad about the regents scholarship but UCLA does offer legacies additional aid according to this page https://alumni.ucla.edu/scholarships/prospective-students/

What is regents? everyone is talking about them. (excuse my ignorance — I’m from the east coast)

@blountwil2 Those are the alumni scholarships I was referrring too in my above post. They are open to everyone but will send specific invites around the same time as Regents. Read my post for a specific breakdown but you do not need to be legacy. It is just sponsored by the alumni association.

@schoolemail34 Regents is for the best of the best. If you are invited it essentially means you have been accepted. It will include a base award of $2k, priority enrollment, priority housing, undergrad Advising, research, and parking. Def a prestigious award.

The Regents Scholarship Program was established by the Regents of the University of California in 1962, and represents one of the highest honors awarded to a student at the University. Regents Scholarship recipients are selected on the basis of demonstrated academic excellence, leadership and exceptional promise. Although the Financial Aid and Scholarships office administers the Regents Scholarship Program on the UCLA campus, financial need is not used as a criterion in the selection process.

UCLA awards up to 100 Regents scholarships each year to entering and transfer students and currently has a total of 450 Regents Scholars enrolled at UCLA.

The UCLA Regents Scholarship program is unique to the UCLA campus, therefore, the award cannot be transferred to other UC campuses, nor could other UC campus Regents Scholarship awards be honored at UCLA. Selection of the Regents Scholars is completed by each campus individually.

The top 1.5% of the entering freshmen applicant pool is invited by the Faculty Committee on Honors, Awards and prizes and the Financial Aid and Scholarships office to compete for the UCLA Regents Scholarship.
Entering freshmen are awarded a four-year scholarship (12 straight academic quarters not including summer).

All Regents Scholars are considered for a $2,000 honorarium regardless of financial need.

The Regents Scholarship need-based award is determined annually and is designed to supplement the Cal Grant A and B programs, Pell Grant award and other outside scholarship awards.

Scholars must maintain a minimum 3.0 GPA during all quarters of attendance and are required to enroll in a minimum of 12 units per quarter.

Students receive preferential Pre-Enrollment starting with their second and subsequent quarters, guaranteed Housing (as long as the Housing application is submitted by the Housing Office deadlines), guaranteed parking (as long as the Parking application is submitted by the Parking Office deadlines), and Faculty Mentorship is established by the Regents Scholars Society to each and every Regents Scholar, as requested.

All Regents Scholars are eligible to join the Regents Scholar Society and are strongly encouraged to establish membership in this official campus student organization.

@10s4life what do you mean invited? is it like an award thing like National Honors Society?

@schoolemail34 For both of those awards emails will be sent to select applicants in early 2017 inviting you to reply. I was not invited for Regents but received the alumni scholarship invite in 2016. I was eventually admitted.

@Gumbymom but is it a full ride or just $2,000?

@tacanadian They will only give you more than 2,000 if you have demonstrated need. Meaning based on the fafsa you will not get more than what you are qualified for. Also Regents is so rare it is best to plan financially without any merit aid.

95 days…

@tacanadian: The information I posted stated the FA portion of Regents will be based on need aid from eligible applicants for Cal grants (in-state applicants) and Pell grants (Federal). If you are not eligible for these need-based grants, you would receive only the $2000/year.

Can anyone chance me? UCLA is my favorite…if I don’t get in I’ll be so sad :frowning:

@sadsenior Stats look good. Chancing is pretty pointless TBH. No one but admissions officers know and people here can only make educated guesses based on released stats. The worst chancers are fellow applicants cause they themselves haven’t even been admitted yet. This thread is most useful for asking questions about the school, academics, campus life, technical questions, or the admissions process but admission chances could be done in your own head. I can say you have a 0-100% chance of getting in and it won’t matter what I think. Enjoy senior year and don’t stress you’ll love the college you eventually attend even if it isn’t UCLA.

@sadsenior With those stats you should not call yourself “sad” senior!
The only weak thing in your stats could be your second SAT II choice (Chinese) which could be ignored by adcoms, assuming you are Chinese. But still you will most likely be admitted to UCLA!

@10s4life Yeah I guess ur right, it’s best not to trick myself into a false sense of “xxx person said i’ll get in!” but thanks. still…crossing my fingers for the day haha

@sadsenior Now that is the spirit! Best of luck and let me know if you have any questions about UCLA.

I applied to the school of Film and Television, featuring their 2% acceptance rate!
But you know what, I’m an optimist. Until I get rejected, I’ll continue to hope, because I truly poured my heart and soul into the application! That’s what you all need to do to! Realize that UCLA is a reach for everyone, but you’ve got to stay hopeful. Anything can happen!
Good luck to everyone who applied!

@WJShipp That’s honestly a fantastic attitude. More people need that mindset. It’s something that would be a huge asset to the campus. Good luck when decisions come out.

@10s4life Thanks!
But it’s true though. UCLA is a reach, and whatever happens happens!
Now, I couldn’t help but notice your profile pic. Are you a current student, and if so, how do you like it?

@WJShipp Yes I am a current student! I just finished my first quarter and loved it. It’s all I could’ve ever imagined. Is there any specific questions you had?
