Does anyone know if I audition for UCLA dance major and get denied, will UCLA still consider my application for another major? I would like to be a dance major, but UCLA is my first choice (my secondary major would be either Econ or linguistics). As a junior I have a 4.4gpa and 35 ACT (perfect 36 in STEM so math might be a consideration as well). I don’t want to audition for the dance if a rejection there throws out my whole application. Thanks in advance for any information you can provide.
They won’t. You can only apply to one school. Dance is in arts and architecture. Econ or linguistics is in L&S. If you apply to L&S major doesn’t matter since everyone is admitted undeclared
Have you looked at the UCLA dance major? It’s not particularly geared towards dancing professionally if that is your objective (though some very good dancers went there this year). UCI and UCSB have a stronger dance reputation than UCLA amongst the UCs (as do other SoCal schools like USC and Chapman). So think about why you would do dance in college.
One option is to have an academic list of colleges and a dance list of audition-based programs and apply to both sets of schools. That’s what my D did. She found that strong academics helped a lot with merit scholarships if you passed the dance audition, because the strongest dance programs are not always at schools with stringent academic admission standards.
I knew some girls who were really good dancers but didn’t really intend on making it a career. They felt like they had a better chance of getting in as dance majors, so they were admitted that way and then later switched to L&S majors and completely out of dance.
I don’t want to dance professionally; it’s just my passion. I am still trying to determine if I want to major in dance or just take classes and maybe minor. I have time to decide. I am applying to UCSB but don’t want to do BFA.
