UCLA Engineering Q&A

I honestly don't think that's feasible. CS 32 is the hardest course out of your course list by far, and I strongly suggest you take three courses your first quarter at UCLA, especially if you're going to be taking CS 32 at that time, because it's quite time-consuming.

By the way, have you played the game Xenogears (PSX)?

^^ ah thanks...yea CS 32 scares me...I think I need to brush up on my C++. Anyway along with CS 32 and a GE what other course should I take? which is easier EE 2 or EEM16?

of course I have...would I get "Citan" out of thin air?

Flopsy,

I would like to know how good the counseling is at UCLA, because the academic counseling at my JC was not really helpful.

Thanks

hey flopsy, thanks for your previous help. i've got another question i hope you can entertain

i'm currently enrolled in calculus at a local community college (but i am a high school student). does this allow me to skip the math diagnostic?

thanks in advance for your help

Does engineering (CSE in particular) require one to take government and economics? (as in does taking the gov AP and econ AP test even help me?) I looked on the website, but it's sort of confusing lol

Do honors students in CL&S really get priority enrollment, and since HSSEAS students cannot be "honors sudents", do they enroll after these students for GE classes?

Can HSSEAS students take "Honors Collegium" GE classes?

Does getting a 4 or 5 on the AP English tests exclude students from taking only the Writing I class, or the Writing II class also?

The sample curriculum for CS shows only 3 classes the first quarter. Since CS is pushed for time, probably over 4 years, should students take only 3, or 4?

Thanks!!

Actually i researched some more, and i came upon these 2 sites: <a href="http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect/APCreditEN.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/Prospect/APCreditEN.htm</a>
and <a href="http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/ge/GE-EngrNew05-06.pdf%5B/url%5D">http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/ge/GE-EngrNew05-06.pdf</a></p>

according to the 1st website, i DO get credit for AP US Hist and AP Gov but not econ, but then the 2nd website doesn't mention any of them so i don't know if any of my AP's count, can you clarify?

Hey Flopsy, If i get a 5 on calculus BC this year. I might be able to skip 31a and 31b is that a good idea? is 32A hard for a incoming freshmen? and I heard for grad school we can't AP out of classes we have to take all classes at the college. is that true?

EE 2 is definitely easier than EE M16A.

I wish I knew... Although I've spoken to some HSSEAS counselors, I've never actually sought out real counseling from my departmental counselor. You're definitely going to get better counseling here than at a JC; that's a given.

Nope, sorry... I'm pretty sure that only AP Calculus AB/BC credit is recognized for skipping the Mathematics Diagnostic Test.

Arrrgh. I don't know what's going on here with these new AP credit policies, sorry.

Yes, College Honors students get earlier enrollment appointments than non-College Honors students. Yes, HSSEAS students usually enroll after College Honors students for GE classes. Some HSSEAS students can take "Honors Collegium" classes, but I think you usually need to ask the professor to make an exception. I know that Math 31AH is available for Engineering students to enroll in, for example. I thought AP English 4/5 scores excluded students from taking Eng Comp 3; maybe things have changed this year. Students should take three classes during their first quarter regardless of major for the sake of starting with a strong GPA. Besides, one more class during freshman year has little effect on the upper-division courseload due to the bottleneck effect at the end of sophomore year.

I don't know how smart you are. If you think you've mastered single-variable calculus and don't want to pad your GPA that badly, then by all means skip Math 31A and Math 31B. No, Math 32A is not hard for an incoming freshman, and most engineers take it as their first math course. That last question is a Medical School question, I believe (confirm?)... Engineering graduate school adcoms, however, couldn't care less whether you've tested out of lower-division math classes.

whats the difference between 31B and 32A? Is it the same material but harder or totally new stuff?

flopsy: recommend some good engineering counselors to go to....and what's your major?

hey flopsy,

does the school of engineering at UCLA have any admission guaranteed agreements with community colleges in california? if not how hard is it really to get into UCLA from a community college school? do u know the average gpa of accepted engineering transfer students form CCC?
my goal is to transfer to UCLA in one year. my major is aerospace engineering and if i dont get accepted to UCLA, ill go to UCSD as they do have a TAG (transfer admission guaranteed) agreement with my school, west valley college

bruneli: the TAP thing UCLA has is only for Letters & Science...UCLA doesn't have any guaranteed admission for Engineering...if you want to transfer from CCC, try to keep your GPA above 3.7 and finish as many pre-reqs as you can...

I got in UCLA EE with 3.78 from CCC....good luck.

forgot to mention. here is the admission profiles

<a href="http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof.htm%5B/url%5D">http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/Adm_tr/Tr_Prof.htm</a></p>

for Engineering average GPA for almost every major is around 3.7-3.8

Math 31B: integrating single-variable functions
Math 32A: differentiating multi-variable functions

That's all there is to it.

Can't recommend any counselors, since I've never gone in for counseling and don't remember any of the counselors' names... I'm Computer Science.
