UCLA Engineering Q&A

rasenganx - i dropped my lab week 2, and so did a couple other people in my class. its not that uncommon (but be prepared to ahve a ****ty ta)

If I am planning on studying computer science engineering, and don't already know C++ am I screwed?

No, but don't expect an easy A in CS 31. Those are for the C++ savants.

you're not screwed.
there's program in computing 10A, a basic intro to C++ that assumes no prior programming experience.
you can just take that first xD

PIC 10A is way easier than CS 31. It's as basic as MATLAB and is very straight forward.

CS 31 makes you think way more, and projects take much longer to complete.

anyone know how long the PIC 10A projects take? cuz i might take it next quarter, but it'd be on top of three other classes. it's between that, or E&SS 8 (earthquakes, a physical sci w/lab).
trying to figure out which is easier to get an A in...

I was just reading the discussion about changing between engineering majors. Can someone tell me if it's difficult to change out of engineering into another major in L & S, if I change my mind during freshman year?

No, it's very easy to switch from HSSEAS to CL&S, especially as a freshman.

Greetings. I was wondering what you would recommend for a Freshman Fall Quarter schedule for a CSE major. I am currently a high school senior, have received a 5 on the AP Computer Science test, and will probably get 4 or 5 on Calculus BC, Spanish, and Biology.

By the way, thanks for answering all these questions. This thread is pretty awesome.

CS 31
CS 1
Math 32A
Chem 20A

Have you ever heard of anyone going from a bachelor's in CSE moving on to medical school?

What if I wanted to change majors to BME or mechanical engineering?

And lastly, where can I find information on average GPAs in these majors?

Thanks, flopsy.

[ol]
[]No.
[]You have to apply as soon as possible as a freshman, and keep your high school stats high.
[li]Through the grapevine, or try asking the HSSEAS OASA.[/li][/ol]

I have a question: Let's say I get admitted to UCLA as a physics major after transferring from a community college, but decided to switch to engineering. How hard is it to change majors into engineering? Is there any chance of changing to engineering if I decide to after my junior year?

Sorry, but if you're less than two years away from your expected graduation date, it's almost impossible to change into HSSEAS, especially if you've recently transferred to UCLA under a CL&S major. I've never heard of anyone changing majors into engineering after Junior year, transfer or not. Super Reach.

either super reach or super senior
well, that's assuming they'd LET you do that, which i guess they don't.
i just liked the joke xD

well couldn't I petition so I could graduate in an extra year or 2?

You could, but don't get your hopes up about those kinds of petitions in your third and fourth years.

If it's March it must be AP sign-up question time...

Incoming ME Major trying to make enough sense of the AP credit policy to decide which tests to plunk down $100 for in the next week or so.

Already Took: Calc AB (5), Physics B (5)

Could take this May:

-Calc BC (necessary if taking assessment test anyway?)
-German Language
-English Language/Composition (looks like a 4-5 fulfills EngComp 3 req't?)
-Chemistry
-Computer Science

Little help?

what's the difference between CSE and CS?

Flopsy:

What is the approximate average GPA of engineering students after their freshman year? (after spring quarter) Or if that is hard to answer, roughly what percentage of students will have a 3.0 GPA after the first year?

How long do lab reports in the Physics series take? I hear it is time consuming.
