UCLA Engineering Q&A

chem 153a is biochem. it sucks.

:0 you're in 153a already?

Can I choose an EE class as Breadth course haha?

The difference between the two is that breadth courses are three engineering courses outside your major (yes, EE counts if you're not an EE major). HSSEAS GE electives are social science/humanities courses like the ones you listed.

Flopsy,

So, what happens when a petition for a change of major does not go through?

Does Engineering 183 count as a breadth class, or even a Writing II? When do people usually take that?

Your petition form will have a handwritten reason for denial at the bottom (e.g. low GPA). That reason will be the thing you have to eliminate in order to change your major.

No, it doesn't count as a breadth class or a Writing II. Most people take it during their fourth year.

I know for some engineering majors, it requires a project design class and then doing an actual project for the last two quarters.

How does that run? Is there a mentor and how much time do you think it takes to complete?

Yes. CS/CSE/EECE majors have an engineering capstone project (CS M52B) where you have to design and build a complete digital system with an expensive FPGA over the course of a quarter. The massive Computer Engineering research and unending all-nighters learning the Xilinx ISE/EDK makes this course nigh-unbearable for a 4-unit course. Nobody likes this class -- even the students who enjoyed CS 151B/152A. There is no mentor -- just a laboratory TA who's almost as disgruntled as we are. You have to do it too.

It satisfies the Ethics GE requirement. Take it with friends, because there is a team research project which is graded based on the entire teams work. Therefore, you need to choose your group members wisely. This is probably why most people take it their senior year.

How come people tell me the last 2 quarters of the engineering curriculum is very laid back when we have these design projects??

flopsy, do you know if scoring low, like getting a 2, on AP tests can affect admission status? Or does UCLA just go by grades not the AP test grades

I don't think AP tests affect admission status. It affects you more personally - in a way where you don't get the credits.

I meant to type "CS M152B".

They're probably not CS/CSE/EE majors, or they successfully petitioned the OASA to reduce their enrollment to 8 units for their final two quarters. Also, there are some people who deliberately save all their GEs for junior/senior year, so they might be taking one engineering course and two/three GEs during those quarters.

flopsy:
I got in as chemical engieering major as a transfer from another UC. on my application i stated that im planning to take a my 3rd quarter Ochem in summer, what if i change my mind now...will my admission be revoked??...

thanks!!

Yes, your admission would probably would be revoked, assuming you don't tell UCLA right away.

the engr 183 class is a joke btw....I BSed all my papers and ended up with a A+...

Did you have Weltman? Also, what were the tasks in the class? An uppclassman said it was 20+ page group reports.
