lol his FIRST name is luca, not his last name.

and malkan was a douchebag. i still stand by that. he taught at a second grade level and tested like everyone else, which sucked.

Yeah, I listed it as Luca since you've talked about him everywhere and it would be easier to recognize 'Luca' than 'Bertello'.

Does anyone now what is the relative difficulty of UCLA's computer science in comparison with EECS at Berkeley? I've heard EECS is a real killer so I'm looking into UCLA more.

I believe you can graduate with EECS at UCB in ~3 years with careful planning.

oh. huh. that is true.

hes coming to dinner!! should i walk him? i want ot wear my slutty dress but i cant since its monday night dinner... i should buy him flowers!

Hey I am going to be an EE next year at UCLA. I am really afraid of not doing too well... like dropping out... or just not being able to keep up with everyone else... cause iono if I am that smart / talented...

Anyway, here's what I am getting at... I have heard that there are some weeder courses like early CS courses that could maybe destroy me... I have no experience at all with programming... Do you think it would be a good idea to learn some programming this summer? I was thinking of taking a C++ class this summer at a CCC.

Will that even help much? If not... I don't really want to take it because it literally eats up the first 2 months of my summer =. I keep hearing that this is my only/last summer to relax, so iono if this would be the best thing to do.

Thanks in advance!

Berkeley EECS is supposed to be harder than UCLA CS/CSE, but it's all second-hand information.

You will be at a definite disadvantage (especially if you want to get an A) if you have no C++ experience as a freshman. Study if you can, but it's not like you'll be failing CS 31/32 if you're not as experienced with C++ as the rest.

I had limited programming in high school, since I wasn't really interested until senior year. Since most of the students have experience (a lot of them took the AP Comp Sci test), it's definitely best if you read a book and try some samples problems or take a course over the summer. If you don't, you can still work hard in the class and get an A though - just depends on how much time you spend on it =]

I hate Misuk.

I want Jan.

Looks like most eng majors require at least CS 31, not just EE/CS, so surely not everyone in the class has taken programming in high school. Our high school's programming class uses java, not C++. Is that at all helpful for CS 31?

Right -- I forgot about the fact that non-CS/CSE/EE people now have to take CS 31, so that evens the playing field quite a bit. Yes, Java is useful for CS 31.

Jan seems to always respond, misuk... not so much.

My S is an EE freshman this year and he opted for taking it easy his "last" summer. He found that CS31 and CS32 were harder than expected and most of his classmates had previous experience. He ended up getting a C in both classes, but he know realizes he could have done much better if he had done some previous studying or taken a prior CC class. So, it's up to you...

Misuk's been a lot better recently

She forwarded my announcement 15 minutes after I sent it, but she's still a *****

THANKS SO MUCH EVERYONE!!

I am hopefully going to gain some programming experience this summer. BUT I just checked online, and my local CCC is almost filled for the class... I can't even sign up until June 4th. I don't even think I am going to get in...

Do you guys have any suggestions for how I could learn some programming a different way? Man I don't even know if it's something I could teach myself... I seriously have zero experience =.

Buy a C++ reference book.

You'll need more than a summer's worth of programming to get used to it. Teaching yourself takes a long time. Use the summer to learn the basics. Expect to be a pure logic genius or study very very hard to get an 'A' in CS31 from your position.

Summer could be enough. A week could be enough. For some people it just clicks, for others it doesn't. The CS31 projects are pretty doable. CS32 and CS33 are an entirely different story though.

Buying a beginner's C++ book and doing the provided exercises will help you a lot.

How firm is the policy that says you can't repeat a course you passed an AP test on, especially in something as key to engineering as physics? Is taking Physics 1B 2nd qtr (instead of 1A) pretty doable after not having any physics since junior year h.s.?

I chose to retake Physics 1A (after getting a 5 on the AP exam) and I regret doing so. It was pretty pointless and was pretty much just a GPA boost but I would have rather passed out and been a class ahead.

Taking Phyiscs 1B 2nd qtr is definitely doable after not having any physics since junior year.
