UCLA Engineering Q&A

Its because of people like me, who try to put off classes they hate as long as possible. Dont worry though, I'll be here in the winter (or maybe next winter)

Me too!

You don't need a special configuration for engineering... All the software you need as an engineering student is either provided by HSSEAS as a free download, or is made available via Remote Desktop. Also, if you need a faster CPU or lots of RAM to run your CS 31/32/33 projects in ample time then you're doing something wrong.

LOL. mhmmmm

Is ChE M105 offered anymore?
I talked to the UG chemistry department, and they said the only ChE class that could be the equivalent of 110A is M105, but I don't see it offered fall, spring or winter/

Do you recommend any math 32a professors?
<a href="http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/detselect.aspx?termsel=07F&subareasel=MATH&idxcrs=0032A+++%5B/url%5D">http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/detselect.aspx?termsel=07F&subareasel=MATH&idxcrs=0032A+++</a>
I wanted Rogawski, but I guess he is filled =. I am thinking about Ward, but he doesn't have any reviews on bruinwalk =. Liu seems to have some complaints about his accent, etc =X and Chayes seems to be very hard...

Anyone?

...

Bueller?

No experience with any of those professors, sorry.

is the intro to chemical engineering really important to take?
i believe that it is closed. but its only orientation 101. what happens to the rest of the chemical engineers. should i get a PTE in the fall?

<a href="http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/detselect.aspx?termsel=07F&subareasel=CH+ENGR&idxcrs=0010++++%5B/url%5D">http://www.registrar.ucla.edu/schedule/detselect.aspx?termsel=07F&subareasel=CH+ENGR&idxcrs=0010++++</a></p>

I'm a freshman majoring in CS and I'm planning to have my fall schedule like this:

CS 1
CS 31
MATH 32A (Scored a 5 on Calculus BC)
CHEM 20A

Also, I don't know whether I should take 3 or 4 classes this fall. Any suggestions?

For CS 31, all of Smallberg's classes are full and I'm now stuck with Rohr. I read about Rohr on Bruinwalk, and the consensus seems to be that his lectures are boring and dry. So, being a CS major with very little programming experience, am I screwed?

ChE 10 is pretty easy, but its such BS and you HAVE TO SHOW UP TO EACH LECTURE

Take those 4 courses. CS 1 isn't a full-sized course so it doesn't really count; you've got a fair courseload with that already. Have fun with Prof. Rohr -- he's not really that boring.

i was thinking of taking the 4 classes the same as flamealex, but rohr has like 15 spots left if that and theres still 3 more orientations to go through, what happens if all of the cs 31 classes fill up? will they open more or will i just have to start looking for another class to replace it?

it just seems kind weird that its only the end of the first session and the cs 31 is already filled =</p>

hey flopsy, i am taking this intro comp sci class at a community college. i checked assist.org, and the class doesnt give me any credit for any classes, but im assuming i can still get unit credits right? how would i do this anyway? i never told ucla i was taking this summer course, so im not really sure what i shud do to tell them... i know i could probably order a transcript or something from the community college after i finish the course or something, but is that all i need to do? do i need to tell ucla ahead of time?

This was the case for me last year (since I was orientation 108) and I believe they opened up another class...it shouldn't be anything to worry about :).

I was still stuck with Rohr though, and for people in my class who had limited programming experience, they didn't do too well. But if you catch on fast/learn well independently, the class shouldn't be too bad.

Most people whine and cry everyday about having Rohr - don't be one of those people :)

I am 90% confident that any class that's not on assist.org is not unit-transferrable. You should have submitted a summer course equivalency prior to enrolling, but even then, it's not guaranteed to provide class units.

i'll be happy to just get into any cs 31 class, MadeInChina, lol =p, i'll try to learn some over the summer and then really focus on that class during the year and i'll remember not to cry about having him haha

thanks BoelterHall

i actually was being dumb i think... i was doing what it said on the homepage... i put UCLA / el camino college and then selected electrical engineering - it only showed the major reqs, etc
( i was looking here <a href="http://www.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=19&dir=1&sia=CAMINO&ria=UCLA&ia=CAMINO&oia=UCLA&aay=06-07&ay=07-08&dora=ELEC+ENG%5B/url%5D">http://www.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=aa&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=19&dir=1&sia=CAMINO&ria=UCLA&ia=CAMINO&oia=UCLA&aay=06-07&ay=07-08&dora=ELEC+ENG</a> )

NOW i just checked to see what computer science courses are transferable for unit credit at UC's, and it lists Computer Science 1, the class im in

<a href="http://www.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=tca&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=28&ia=CAMINO&ay=07-08&arc=N&aay=06-07&dora=COM+SCI%5B/url%5D">http://www.assist.org/web-assist/report.do?agreement=tca&reportPath=REPORT_2&reportScript=Rep2.pl&event=28&ia=CAMINO&ay=07-08&arc=N&aay=06-07&dora=COM+SCI</a></p>

so what shud i do now =o

If it is on the list, you are fine. You'll have to follow the instructions on the website to transfer the credits after. I believe you must submit formal paperwork for that.

BTW, that is a waste of time, but your 1 unit is better than nothing. CS1 is not a hard class; I don't know why you are getting it out in the summer.

ooo nooo its not the same thing as the CS1 at UCLA
that is a 1 unit freshman seminar on CS or something
i dont need to take that for my EE major
i was taking this to learn some c++ before ucla, since i know none - its an actual cs class (not a seminar)
this will give me 4units, which will (sadly) help me get to sophmore standing after first quarter lol... (didn't get a lot of AP credit haha)

I just enrolled in Mech & AE 103 ( Fluid Mechanics) for Fall and I heard bad things about Professor Smith. As of yet no one is assigned to the course, but if it is Smith I want to know whether or not to drop the course and wait for someone else.

Thanks
