UCLA Engineering Q&A

Yes, you should take CS 31 with Rohr. You won't graduate on time if you don't get CS 31 out of the way as soon as possible, especially if you're CS/CSE/EECE.

you guys probably know this already but make sure you follow the curriculum for the year in which you were admitted.. I just found out that I've following the 06-07 catalog and I'm supposed to be following the 05-06 so I have to take a few more units now, minus CS 31.

is there any reason to take CS31 this year for MAE? looking through the general catalog didn't yield any classes requiring it. alternatively, since i'm already familiar with C++, can i get away with not going to class....

should i put off 20b/l or 1a til spring? or take 20b but put off 20l....

I think if you were admitted for the 06-07 term, you have to take CS 31. For me though, I don't need to take CS 31 because I'm following the 05-06 catalog and also because MAE 20 satisfies the requirement. For Fall 06, they changed MAE 20 to CS 31.

i am a freshman, chemical engineering.
the times for CS 31 are undesirable for the next quarter. would it be bad to put off taking this class next quarter? i looked at 07S, and CS31 was not offered, which im guessing is a possibility for 08S. So this would mean taking it sophomore year. will these screw up my schedule based on the mapped out schedule that is given in the announcent thing?

silly101:

Michel Moraga has sent out multiple emails starting last year regarding CS 31 openings - it has not extended to Spring terms. In fact, an email about that topic was just sent out today again.

This means that CS 31 is flexible schedule-wise as long as you are not EE (excluding EEBM) or CSE for engineers. It is not a prerequisite class for other classes for Chemical Engineering.

In any sense, CS 31 is a tough class for anyone who hasn't had programming experience .

Kind of an odd change in my opinion. I think MATLAB is still imporant for some practical usage, right?

As for MAEs, I don't think Introduction C++ and Autodesk Inventor is enough for large companies. Why not just focus on ProE for the design aspect?

It's kind of interesting that Nachenberg is teaching 32 again .

sux they made cs 170a fall only...the alternate class for cs majors was not as appealing as this class, from what i remember...now i gotta wait a year?!?! uhhh, maybe i should take that other one...we still need engr 183/185 right?!?! i'm following the newest catalog if that makes any difference...i remember all engineers having to take an ethics class

TAKE NACHENBERG!!!

and he said last year that he might be back so it's not that interesting

Yes it is strange to get rid of MAE 20. A lot of courses use Matlab like MAE 171, 107, 169, and 182C. Most of the professors I know use either Fortran or Matlab. Even on the assist website it said fortran was recommended.

In my experience, C++ has been almost useless in my ME courses. I've only taken C++ and I've been able wing it on courses that use Matlab. Knowing C++ just gave me general idea of how the computer will compute whatever kind of matlab code I put in it. I just had learn about the different commands and other things as time went on.
The Civil engineering dept still offers matlab, so ME's can MAYBE take C&EE 15 and then petition for credit for CS 31.

flopsy is it typical for a cs&e major to not take chem 2nd and third quarter of freshman year? during orientation we filled out these sheets with schedules for the whole year and winter quarter the lady said that i should be doing like
math 32b
physics 1a
cs 32
ge

is that a typical schedule?

If you're referring to Chem 20A, most CSE majors take it during Fall Quarter of freshman year. That schedule is indeed typical of CSE majors for Winter Quarter of freshman year.

ya i'm taking chem 20a, was just making sure that most dont take any other chem freshman year, thanks

is it true that engineering students get a certain amount of free printing? if so, where do we go to get that?

The ESUC lounge. You have to be a ESUC member though.

ORL gives $5 worth of free print credit (100 pages) if you activate your account. You an receive more if you attend the RLCC's workshops too.

I think you get a few hundred pages of free printing with ESUC membership, plus bonus 100 if you solve their riddles (though I'm not totally certain if they do this anymore).

sorry, what is ESUC?

ESUC is FREE for now, because they screwed up the computers. Everyone is logged in as admin. The riddle gives you candy. I think Sona's doing it now.

ESUC = engineering society of UCLA. 5800 Boelter across from Seascafe

is there some sort of membership card we should have picked up if we payed the $5?

yeah there should have..

you should be able to pick up your membership card if an officer is around in the esuc lounge. i believe they have officer hours posted on the door.
