UCLA OOS or UVA In state

I don't qualify for financial aid to UCLA. I figured this out by using the calculator on the website. Is there any way that this ruling is wrong. My parents have to pay off the house, cars, and my brother's graduate school too. I dont really want to go to UVA but I will be forced too because of the money. Which should I go to?

Are you kiddin’ me? UVa is THE no-brainer.

I don’t think any large public U is worth the $45K+ it costs to attend. Go to UVA.

I’m with Blue, are you kidding? I’d pay twice for UVA what I’d pay for UCLA, in state or not!

UVA, and I’m sure you’ll find exactly the right people there so that you have a great time.

I agree. Even IF the money were the same between both schools, I would be in the LONG line trying to get into UVA. No contest.

I don’t quite agree with the UVa infatuation. It is strong in some areas and very weak in others–weak in areas a “top” university should not be weak in such as most sciences and engineering. The undergrad business school and basic liberal arts such as English, history, and poli-sci are all very good. It’s major funding source–the endowment has take a huge hit in the current downturn and fundraising to backfill it has slowed. State support has been marginal with another large hit this year after some recovery the last couple of years. Nor is UVA well positioned to take advantage of the expanded research money being doled out by the Obama administration.

That said UCLA is not worth much more money than UVa instate.

I would be majoring in the science department. Also, UVA doesn’t have neuroscience. Should this make me wanna go to UCLA

Yikes, sounds like the cart got before the horse last fall when you were applying to schools… were there not in-state VA schools that are strong in sciences? If UVA is not, then certainly W&M and James Madison are not either… what about Tech? Can it be that VA offers no outstanding sciences in-state in ANY school?

I’m sorry you appear to really be in a bind where you might not be able to easily afford a first class science education in-state… it might be necessary for you to get into a tough debt position with UCLA if you’re really set on sciences…

For neurosciences, it is UCSD, not UCLA all the way… nothing else compares in the UC system. Were you accepted to UCSD?

This is a no brainer. Virginia is the choice. UCLA is great but no worth a DIME more than UVA. By the way, be grateful for what you have, in state admission to one of the top schools in the country. There are WORSE fates in life.
