Major? Future plans?..if grad school is in the picture, can’t imagine paying $200,000 for undergrad, but that’s me…(.a SUNY grad who attended Wharton for grad…)…you can relate…

Since I knew it was gonna come down to prestige for you, can you live with either one?

50 plus plus!!! Uf is great.

Anyone???

I am flying blind here because I don’t have a California orientation.

Further, while University of Florida is rather highly respected in the State of Florida, I don’t have a good idea of its reputation in other areas of the country.

Naturally, I want the best for my kid.

What will the student’s major be? Some UCLA majors are outstanding, while some majors are simply good…those “good” majors are not worth an extra $180,000, in my opinion.

Vineyard:

He would probably major in something like political science or international relations. He got an 800 on his CR SAT and an 800 on his writing SAT.

Math and Science are not his strong points.

Not a student, just a former student with a son at UC Berkeley.

You ask good questions, and I’ll try to answer them as objectively as I can, even though your questions call for a subjective approach.

First, the most important thing is to find out from your son which university he is interested in attending. The ultimate choice, if you give him one, should be his. When I say “if you give him one”, I mean exactly what you are trying to do, allow him the financial resources to pick. For example, I told my son that if he really wanted to apply to USC, that was fine, but we couldn’t afford to send him there.

Second, when you say $50k, does that include soup to nuts? Meaning, oos tuition, books, room, board, laundry, miscellaneous, and trips back home for the holidays?

Third, you might want to check on how your son performs. Does he work steadily, without prompting and nagging, does he procrastinate and allow pressure to interfere with his studies? I ask that because UCLA works on the much faster quarter system, while based on google info on UF, they are on the semester system. Need to know what his rhythm is like. The quarter system is very fast-paced.

I am not very familiar with the University of Florida, other than it has a good football team! And although it may just be me hiding under the proverbial rock all these years, I haven’t heard anything about UF – so for me, it has no reputation, good, bad, or indifferent.

UCLA has always had a stellar reputation, across the country and around the world. It is located in the hills of Westwood, surrounded by multi-million dollar homes. To the direct north, Bel Air. To the immediate east, Holmby Hills, followed by Beverly Hills. To the immediate west, Brentwood, Pacific Palisades and the blue Pacific Ocean.

The campus is gorgeous, especially the original quad housing the Powell Library, Royce Hall, the Humanities Building, and Haines Hall.

I think you mentioned that your son would major in political science, right? Great major. My husband majored in that when he was at UCLA. The poli sci department is in Bunche Hall, aka the “Waffle Building”, with some courses taught in Haines.

If your son has spring break soon, and you have no plans, you might want to take a very quick trip out here and check out the school. Then he can get the feel of the school.

Check out new student and tour information here:
[Tours for Prospective Students - UCLA Undergraduate Admissions](http://www.admissions.ucla.edu/prospect/tours.htm)

If you can’t get into a tour, just check the times of the tours and follow the pack. There’s always some people who fail to show, and even if they all show up, there’s always a few tour “audits” – I ended up doing that with my son and no one complained. Especially if you are coming from out of state.

Hope this helps!

UCLA 77

Yes

Thank you

Very helpful

To me, mothers in shacks in rural China dream of sending their kids to UCLA.

To me, it is a legendary school.

Down here in Florida, some people (especially UF graduates) act as if going to University of Florida is like going to Harvard, so one can get an inflated view of its image and prestige as compared to how it is viewed in the rest of the country.
