UCLA or U of T

Hi everyone,

I have been admitted to Electrical Engineering at UCLA, U of Toronto, and U of Waterloo. Where do you all think I should go, considering the following factors?

  1. Academics / prestige
  2. Employment after graduation or post-graduate studies
  3. Tuition - I am a Canadian citizen, so $30k for Toronto or Waterloo, $80k (converted from $60k USD) for UCLA, but I can afford UCLA
  4. Student life / location

Unless your parents are really made of money, it is hard to imagine the price premium of UCLA over Toronto or Waterloo being even worth considering.

Do you plan to remain in Canada and seek employment there? Then go to U.Toronto. Why pay more to go to UCLA? Unless you really want to be in California and money is no object. For Engineering I can’t see UCLA providing any huge benefit considering cost differential.

Agree ^.

I agree with insane dreamer. I would choose one of the Canadian universities. Engineering at Toronto though is very tough, so consider that. Although you will have the pleasure of living in Toronto for four years, if you are into urban centers with many attractions at your doorstep. If not then Waterloo could be more your speed.

As a Canadian you know Toronto, McGill, Western and UBC are your top universities. Go to the US for grad school. BUT if your parents are made of money and you really want the UCLA experience of gigantic classes, gigantic stadium, go for it!

Do your parents earn 400k+ (Canadian $)? Then go wherever.
If they don’t, go to UT or Waterloo and use some of the savings for spring break in California.
