Which college has a stronger department for political science, economics, english, and philosophy?
Which is more prestigious?

Berkeley. Stronger departments in general, and more prestigious.

If you have high expectation and are ambitious in academics, definitely go to Cal. The thing is, some of UCLA’s departments are good-looking on paper, but they don’t produce like Berkeley does.

They are generally thought to be the same in those areas, UCB is slightly better and more prestigious.

Should be “equal enough” in those areas. Go where you think you’ll be happiest.

this has to be the most debated issue on CC selection

Do a coin toss.
I had friends split decisions b/t LA and Cal. One went to Cal other to LA.

Do a coin toss.
Actually LA has cheaper housing, you may wanna consider location and housing costs.

As an International, this is what I’ve personally observed:

In the State of California, I’ve learned that the difference between Berkeley and UCLA in prestige is minimal, with Berkeley having the edge. But as you go further from California, the prestige difference actually widens. The farthest the observers are from California, the bigger and wider the gap difference becomes. lol

In most countries that I’ve been too, the average educated people have heard of both of them and think they’re both great schools. But there is something with Berkeley that makes some people intrigued. Maybe when they hear you’re from Berkeley, they would assume that you’re super smart and you’ve invented something that’s why you went there. lol

academically I’d say Berkeley slightly has the edge.

But IMHO, choosing a college is not solely on the basis of academic quality. there is the factor of environment, cost, housing, or city. Having said that, personally I’d take UCLA over Berkeley because the environment that I’m in is just the right fit to thrive within.

bump//…

I would say Berkeley has the edge in prestige. But I would absolutely HATE 99% of their student body. I would choose UCLA

why would u hate them??

I don’t know if you can make generalizations about all of the people who attend a university just like that, swimguy. I’ve met quite a few of my future classmates and I love them all.

I’m just remembering the time that I visited, and current students were sitting up in trees because they didn’t want a new stadium…42 trees had to be cut down to make it…it wasn’t their land…they had no right to do that…

Yay Berkeley!!

Yay Liberalism!!

My own opinions though

^ Yeah, sometimes those people can get on your nerves…

bump…

There are a zillion of these threads search them and all you questions will be answered.

For the record, the “treetards” were NOT students.
