Hello fellow Philosophy majors...I just thought we should all have a thread to talk about what classes we are going to take in falll and whatever else you are interested in. First, Im curious how the stats were for phil majors, and the age of everyone. Ill start:

Philosophy
3.7
No TAP
IGETC complete
Pre reqs complete

i’m not a philosophy major but i wanted to add phil as my double major when i get there. there aren’t that many pre-reqs, right?

I was looking at the summer phil classes and i really wanted to take either Philosophy of the Mind (phil 7) or Ethical Theory (phil 22).

I sat in on a friend’s Political Philosophy class when i visited UCLA when their spring quarter began, and the professor (can’t remember his name) was horrendous. he didn’t use a microphone and lectured to the walls. he sounded like he knew his stuff, but he was just talking kind of aimlessly as though he was saying whatever came to his mind. I hope I don’t ever have to take him. :P

I’m still kinda waiting for Cal, but if I don’t get in there I will definitely be a Bruin.

3.9 gpa
tap certified
IGETC complete at end of spring
EC’s: Honors program, part time job
not sure about pre reqs, but I have taken almost every philosophy class at my ccc

It sucks that there’s no rhetoric focus at UCLA, but I guess Phil, or pre law will have to do. I still have to switch majors to English though, that’s priority one after fall quarter. I’ll petition in December, should be easy since I have all the prereqs, then I’ll see about joining student government with a focus on getting a freaking rhetoric major available, don’t know why it’s not, it’s the oldest field of study.

I too am waiting for Cal, but if I don’t get in there I will probably be a Bruin.

3.9 ish gpa
tap? nopers (didn’t hear about it in time)
IGETC complete at end of spring
EC’s: Very little work. Assistant high school soccer coach for a season. On the Dive team for a season. Track for a season.
Pre Reqs: 2/4. But i’ve taken all the philosophy courses at my ccc (not including the world religions which i don’t count as philosophy)

Im 21

@ Eshug, What major would you like to see at the UC’s that you don’t?

Oh, and my impression of rhetoric is that it is the study of how to convince people, whether or not the position is true. I’m not so interested in how to convince people. I just care about what is actually the truth, not what people believe. Most people are idiots anyway (perhaps including me :D)

I could be wrong, feel free to correct me here, or tell my why a rhetoric major is a cool thing.

@Eshug, thanks I feel like I have the stats to get in, but either way I would be stoaked to go to either school… ITS ***N UCLA after all!!!

@absurd mike, looks like we have similar stats, were u able to do any of the pre reqs for Cal? none of the cccs around me offered any of them… let me know how things turn out, good luck

Is anybody thinking of starting early in the summer, instead of waiting for the fall?

I would have like a 3.5, but there’s two F’s I never retook from like four years ago. I wrote a very strong essay, had steep upward trend, founded and was president of the philosophy club, and also had over 200 hours of volunteer work.
