UCLA pre-Biz Econ vs Pepperdine Biz Admin/Sports Mgt with Merit Scholarship

My son has narrowed his choice down to these two schools. He would be a Seaver Regents Scholar receiving an additional Pepperdine Grant that would cover roughly 80% tuition. We are in-state for UCLA. Thanks for your assistance!

Religious environment at Pepperdine desirable for him?

Net price and debt at each?

Attends church regularly but he is not looking specifically for a faith-based environment. He is an extrovert and is comfortable in various settings. PU being a dry campus does not bother him. He comes from a large suburban high achieving public school. Zero debt for both.

Congrats. What does your son want to do with his degree? I personally think that an undergrad degree in business or marketing is too broad and without real experience the job opportunities after graduation are not typically high paying. My advice is to get a more specific degree then minor in marketing and finance. Then after a few years get an MBA. If he still wants to go this route then I dont think there is much difference between the two schools in terms of after grad opportunities. Choose a school that he feels most comfortable at where he can succeed inside and outside of the classroom.

@tboooe, he is intrigued by sports management, but he understands that it is a niche field. He is interested in analytics, so economics and finance are more attractive than marketing. I guess the question comes down to large classrooms and competitive internship opportunities in a high paced environment versus a smaller, more intimate and personable setting with more opportunities for immediate access to resources but not as fast-paced (which he enjoys).

@tboooe, my son is hearing some negative reviews about UCLA Economics. He is not sure if that would be his desired route if he were to attend. How easy would it be for him to switch to a pre-Public Affairs major at the Luskin School?

Hi there – just came across this comment today. What things are you concerned about re: UCLA economics? That’s a quite likely major my son (who was admitted undeclared, just committed to UCLA) might pursue. Wondering if I need to have him investigate a lot further.
