Um, USC after Illinois in social life… whatever happened to the University of Spoiled Children image?

well I’ve heard the area around USC is awful, it’s also hard to get around LA without a car and traffic is terrible at times so that’s why I put USC so low.

Remember, this is just my opinion, it’s not fact.

Academics:

 1. USC, UCLA, UW
 2. Illinois

Traffic in West L.A. is worse. [hint: your No. 1 rated school in post #2 for social life is located in West L.A.] Besides, USC students can roll outta their beds and walk to football games on Saturdays…not so much for UCLA students.

For academics and social life all are fantastic and have their slight strengths and weaknesses in comparison to one another. It depends on what you want to study and what type of environment you prefer. My list for engineering and/or college town life would look different from my list for film and business.

^haha touche. I guess another factor is that I have a preference for UCLA over USC

Pierre,
USC has zip cars, shuttles and bus lines that give access to Los Angeles events. Downtown is just a few minutes away. Two metro stations will open at the edges of the campus.

It is an urban campus, but I think you should read some of the threads from parents who have visited the area and seem to find it a “working class” neighborhood. The university has expanded university shopping and housing areas around the perimeter of the campus. A huge new Master Planned area is under review at the momemt to add acres of landscaping, dorm spaces and shopping areas to the surrounding properties owned by USC.

Hey, I visited USC once. I was not caught in a drive-by shooting, was not mugged, did not witness any drug deals, and was not forced to join a gang (although as a middle-age, white guy, I was probably not considered good gang material).

Edit: I am talking about the area around USC, not on the campus.

Does UW mean Wisconsin or Washington?

I’d put UIUC at the bottom of the list for social life because of its overreliance on Greek life and excessive cliquishness. Even USC is probably better due to all of Los Angeles being within reach.

Don’t count out USC for social life. A hop, skip, jump away is Hollywood, one of the hot areas in the country for social life…

In addition, I understand that USC frat and sorority parties are so great that kids from other colleges such as Pepperdine, Loyola Marymount and even UCLA make the trip to South L.A. to attend.

Years ago you wouldn’t catch me within miles of South L.A. at night, even in a car, but I understand that things have changed in the last ten years or so.

Madison is definitely tops for social life at the school. Halloween in Madison is probably the biggest college party in the world.

I’d say UW, UCLA, and USC are on the top tier, UIUC is on the next tier, and PSU is on the next.
