UCLA rescinded, chance of appeal?

Hi there:

So, I was admitted to UCLA as a transfer for Fall 2009. My previous school of attendance was UC Davis, and Foothill College (does that make me a CC transfer, or a UC transfer, I dont know).

Anyway, I left UC Davis for not taking enough units, they call it minimum progress. Since been taking classes at Foothill. Somehow, the UCLA people missed this when they admitted me, because when I told them, they rescinded my admission. It says in the UC Contract that you must have left a previous UC in good standing. Stupid I know.

In any event, I am hoping to appeal, obviously. I feel being rescinded for not taking enough classes almost a year ago is kinda going overboard. Since I have bonus CC units and AP units, I have more then enough units for graduation (111 at this point in time). My GPA is also well above a 3.0. There are also extenuating circumstances surrounding why I didn't take enough classes (though apparently it wasn't enough for the Admission committee).

I'm wondering if I can appeal this, what are my chances, who I should get letters of support from, etc. Yea, all the admit status went away from myUCLA, so not exactly encouraging. All help is appreciated.

Are you just on progress probation at UC Davis or are you just on academic disqualification or academic probation? If you were on academic probation at the time you left UC Davis, you are basically banned from all UCs and even from returning to UC Davis. The only option is to take summer school.

The UCs are pretty strict when you attended one of their campus and left in bad standing. Bad standing is defined anything below a 2.00 at their campus or not, regardless if you did better at the cc or not. You need talk to Kevin Wada at the UCD Registrar and make an appointment with also College of Letters and Science.

Im “Academically Disquallifed”, I do believe is the distinction used. The people at UCD in fact told me, they would love for me to go to UCLA, but they simply could not change my status. So not sure what talking to them would accomplish. I can get back into UCD for the fall…I just wanna go to UCLA now that Im “in”.

did you list on your application that you are on academic disqualification at UC davis and explain why??

If you were admitted with full disclosure on your part that would signify a contract between you and UCLA.

Somehow, according to an Admissions counselor I talked to, they were under the impression that I would be back in good standing by Spring. But yea, I did explain my situation.

Anyways, it seems my admissions has been rescinded. Anyone know of the chance of appealing a rescinded admissions?

Not UCD but I think the policies/procedues are very similar , they are from UCSB.

What would cause me to be subject to academic disqualification?
You will be subject to academic disqualification if:

* your quarter grade-point average falls below 1.5.

 • you complete two quarters on academic probation without raising your cumulative grade-point average to 2.0.
 • your quarter grade-point average falls below 2.0 while you are on academic probation.
 • your quarter grade-point average falls below 2.2 while you are on reinstatement-probation and your cumulative grade-point average is below 2.0.

"What will happen if I am subject to academic disqualification?
The answer depends on timing and other factors:

If you are subject to academic disqualification at the end of a fall or winter quarter, the dean will review your situation and take one of the following actions without calling for information from you:
* Reinstate you on probation for the following quarter. See Academic Probation.
* Place you on an academic enrollment agreement for the following quarter. An academic enrollment agreement is a contract between you and the dean that details conditions you must meet for continued enrollment.
*

Confirm your disqualification from UCSB. This will happen at the end of fall or winter quarter only if you have failed to satisfy the terms of an academic enrollment agreement for that quarter.

2.

If you are subject to academic disqualification at the end of a spring quarter, you will need to submit a written appeal for reinstatement before the dean will decide whether to allow your continued enrollment at UCSB. See Appealing for Reinstatement.
3.

If you take a break from UCSB, you will need to apply for readmission and submit a written appeal for reinstatement if your academic standing is one of the following.
* Subject to disqualification
* Reinstatement-probation (reinstated on probation)
* Academically disqualified
* Dismissed by Dean’s Action

The dean will then decide whether and under what circumstances to allow you to return to UCSB. Once academically disqualified students have removed the obstacles to their success, we hope they will seek reinstatement. For details, please read Appealing for Reinstatement, below. Note, however, that it may be necessary for you to prove your readiness to return to UCSB by earning high grades in a community college and/or University of California summer session. "

So from what I can take from this, you will have to talk to the dean / counselor at UCD to clear up your classification. This would of been easier if you wanted to return to UCD , but of course you applied and got accepted to UCLA. Sucks because the only way to clear it up is to go to UCD in person and clear it up.

If you read the last sentences, it says you can prove readiness by earning high grades at a CC. Maybe if you mail them your transcripts from CC to show them that you are serious about school, they can allow you to attend UCD again , and will remove your status of academically disqualified. THEN , you can go to UCLA and talk some more?

edit:

http://www.advising.ltsc.ucsb.edu/grades/probation.php

Thank you very much for the information. It would seem that UCSC is far more lenient on these issues then UC Davis. They put me on Academic Disqualification just for not meeting minimum progress, but I still have 111 units and a 3.5 GPA. Sad much?

I am not sure if I have said so already, but the people at UCD told me that putting me in good standing is “physically impossible”. I also get the distinct impression that the Dean is a hard ass. But I will be going up next week to make one final shot, before shooting off an appeal to UCLA, though I do not have high hopes.

Don’t have high hopes. Do you have a valid reason for leaving UCD in poor standing? I hope so, and the excuse better not be “I felt like it”, because then I would have some few extra words for you. If you had a family situation, or life situation that needed immediate attention, there are people in UCLA admissions who understand that and are willing to give you a second shot. If any of the above situations are not true, well then your royall $%^@ed, don’t waist your time, or theirs. :)

So looks like the only chance I have of appealing is to make out the reason of why me being in bad standing shouldn’t be a barrier. Anyone know someone who can help?
