How would you view the UCLA undergrad Math/Econ Major under the Mathematics department as a potential preparation for a Ph.D. in Economics from MIT?

I’m not entirely certain, as I don’t go to UCLA, but I can make an educated guess here.

UCLA is ranked fairly high on the list of the country’s top economics programs (I’m not sure on specific ranking). It is safe to say that UCLA has the ability and resources to prepare you for a Ph.D program at MIT. However, you must have the will and the capacity to perform extremely well and come out with a high GPA and class rank in order to even qualify for a spot in MIT’s program. So it is not a matter of UCLA preparing you (they will); it is a matter of Are you willing to put in the effort and time to do well enough to get to MIT? If you are not confident that you will be able to work hard and do well in UCLA’s econ program, it may not be the right school for you.

My 2 cents.

Flop, thanks a lot for your response.

I am more than willing and confident in what I want to pursue. I know this endeavor is not an easy one, and will test my capabilities to the max, but that’s the fun behind it.

BTW, the Math/Econ Major is under the Mathematics department and not the Econ department.

What school did(are) you attend(ing)?

Err uhhh Math/Econ is an interdepartmental major between math and econ dept.

yes, but it is administered by the Mathematics Dept. :)

Even the econ dept sends you to where: the Mathematics department. :)
