UCLA

If UCLA calculates its own GPA, granting an extra point for AP classes, does that mean getting an A in a normal class would lower my GPA if I got As in AP classes? Because I was planning on taking an easy class to bring up my unweighted GPA. However, if I got all A’s next year, my GPA would be higher if I didn’t take the normal class because it would bring my A’s in the AP classes down. Does that make sense? What do you think?

I’m planning on taking 3 APs next year and my sophomore year GPA was 3.6 UW. I know UCLA only looks at 10-11 grade grades.

The UC’s look at all of your grades but they consider your 10th and 11th grades for admission. However, you seem to be putting your eggs all in one basket and that puts you at a disadvantage: You’ve posted 8 times about UCLA.

You should be worrying about getting into a college other than UCLA.

The UC’s are PUBLIC state universities for state residents. There is tremendous political pressure to accept more state residents. The recent decision, by the Regents of the UC’s, has indicated that the UC’s will be limiting OOS students.

As an out of state resident, that puts you out of luck; your chances are already slim. Then, your GPA is not in line with whom they accept. They do have students who have your stats, but most of these students are usually local students, with low SES stats, whose high schools have admissions contracts with UCLA.

Also, not once have you confirmed that your parents would be willing to pay $60K per year. Have you had the talk? There is NO financial aid for you. NONE. NO scholarships/grants/money of any kind to attend a UC. Are you aware that 4 years would cost your parents almost a quarter of a million dollars???

One thing that “messes up” OOS students is requirement F of the UC’s.

You have to have a visual/performing arts graded class. If you are in band, you have to meet the requirement of being in a graded classroom where you have learned musical concepts. Generally, for many California residents, band doesn’t meet the F requirement. A number of students take AP art history.

I would suggest that you get your head out of the clouds for a while and into some books; focus on getting good grades so that you can be admitted to many of your in-state schools.
