I understand that UCSD and UCLA are both pretty good academically, but in terms of prestige, would UCLA easily trump UCSD?

UCLA has the better prestige in terms of name and overall education. UCSD does have good points as well. It's quite well known in it's science areas and it's biomedical engineering program is one of the best, if not the best, program.

...Why do you even care?

If you can't be satisfied with a school on its own merits, its prestige isn't going to help any. With that said, the three top tier UCs - Berkeley, LA, SD - are very similar in academic prestige.

Sounds like you're having second thoughts

Nope. Although they are the top three UCs, the prestige gap widens between LA and SD slightly.

If I were to represent this in a number scale - 1 to 10 - with 1 being least prestigious and 10 being the most:

Berkeley: 10
UCLA: 9
UCSD: 7
UCI/UCSB/UCD: 5
UCSC: 4
UCR: 3
UCM: 1

I dont regret my choice at all. The courses I want to take don't exist in UCSD, but do exist in UCLA, so UCLA was the obvious choice. The only reason why I am wondering is because I turned down a regents for UCSD and I know a lot of ppl that are going there.

I think that the difference is there, but it may not matter much in the short or long run.

That said, UCLA still carries a pretty sexy name brand that UCSD doesn't seem to match.

i wouldn't say "easily trump".... there is a decided difference in reputation in anything other than the sciences and engineering, but in those fields it's a close call.

UCLA Is such a more appealing name, I mean come on

UCLA Has a huge alumni fan base... true, not USC, but in the LA area it means alot. UCSD? any proud alums there?

They lie.

UCLA is not a prestigious school at all, and might I add that if you are going here instead of Harvard or Princeton, your job prospects look mighty slim.

Honestly, if you're going to assign the name of your school some significance, rather than the strength of its academic programs, general atmosphere, and teacher:student ratio, then I fear I have to do whatever I can (including making **** up) to discourage you from attending this fine institution.
We don't want your linear-minded kind here.

i love it when people equate going to UCLA with getting a good job

not at all. it depends what you do with it.

2000th post

i really dont think ucla is pretigious
i mean come on

Actually a lot of people consider Davis more prestigious than UCSD or at least on the same level.

Everyone basically considers UCLA/Berkeley to be the best (and you can find a thousand threads going back and forth on which one is better, though they are pretty much tied and Berkeley kids just need to stop whining about it).

Cheers.

As opposed to yours?

I think that if you consider the fact that there are literally thousands of universities in the US and that UCLA is in the top 1% of those universities, then you might want to reconsider your position.

Wow, someone srsly has something up their a**. The only thing discouraging me at this moment from going to UCLA would be a poster like mariopuzo.

Now where in my post did I say that I am going to UCLA purely for its name? I made this post just to gain some insight as to how people view UCLA compared to UCSD, not to some how imply that UCLA only has a brand-name superiority. In addition, I mention nothing about atmosphere or teacher:student ratio. I think it is obvious who is being linear-minded here.

I chose UCLA over UCSD for many many reasons. The only reason I would be having second thoughts is wholly financial, since UCSD regents would cover a lot of the tuition costs, and I really do feel I need to do all I can to assist my parents in paying for everything since I get zero financial aid.

NOTA,

UCLA is going to offer, in my opinion, a better overall undergrad experience. This is based on my experience at UCLA for undergrad and UCSD for grad.

its too late to change anyways, instead of ****ing yourself off at the decision why don't you enjoy and look forward to the things UCLA will offer

the only reason why UCLA is found more prestigious over SD is that LA been there longer

the longer the school has been around, the more prestigious it is

Yes...and no.

Stanford's younger than Cal, yet it's pretty close or higher in prestige.

NOTA,
With zero financial aid, UCSD's Regents honorarium is only $2,000 a year, and although every little bit helps, it isn't going to be that big of a savings. So, stop worrying, you'll probably have a better overall experience at UCLA. Good luck!
