UCONN OOS Aid

Hello, i am a ny resident and im wondering if uconn gives good aid. I have an efc of roughly 23k. I know the cost of attendance is 50k for uconn out of state. Is there a good chance that i would get about 15k in aid either financial or merit making it cost about 35k? 35k is the max i can pay probably. What are the chances that this happens? I am very nervous because uconn is pretty much my #1 since i didnt get a single penny from Rutgers NB.

What are your stats?
They give no financial aid but might give you some.merit aid if you’re along they’re top 10%.
If things turn badly, you can wait till may 5th for the NACAC list of colleges that miscalculated yield and have some spots and financial aid left. You’ll have to act fast as these spots go quickly (especially at the best colleges).
Are you instate for NJ? If so, email financial aid with your stats and instate status and ask for reconsideration at Rutgers.
If OOS for Rutgers, see if you can still apply to your state universities.

If not, have you considered any SUNY schools?

Western Connecticut gives in-state to NY residents, you may want to take a look at them. Likewise the MA College of LIberal Arts gives a huge discount to NY residents.

Neither has the name recognition of the schools you mention, but the numbers sure are attractive.

We are from NJ. My daughter is a Junior at UCONN. We got got ZERO from Rutgers as well. She was in the top 12% of her HS class. Our EFC was similar and we got ZERO in Aid or Merit from UCONN… we did get a very small grant after all Merit $ was dispersed and/or not used, as not everyone offered a spot at UCONN with Merit accepts a . There were recently budget cuts in CT, so it could all change. $15,000 from UCONN is not likely unless you are a superstar…

Ugh. How did I not know this? I could have sworn when we were at Husky for a day, they mentioned financial aid, or is that only for in-state. Would think if they gave financial aid to OOS, they would net more money.

We are OOS, and their Special Needs program is the best fit for my son. But there is no way we can pay the $50k PLUS the $6K a year for the special program. It was my first choice! Oh well. He got a $15k merit scholarship from RIT, which also has a special needs program, and he knows a freshman there. He also applied to DU which has a program too. Well, I guess it is good to have realistic expectations. :frowning:

Our state schools are really good (CA), but they have no supports for my son. He is in the top 10% of his class, so maybe… So disheartened.

My daughter is a sophomore at UCONN, OOS from CA. She was in the top 10% of her class and received $15,000 in merit aid. Good luck to your son!

An OOS student I know (from the midwest) received an admit letter today offering $15k (renewable for all 4 years if she keeps her gpa above a 2.5). So these awards are still possible. (But… no idea how rare they might be. And it’s possible that regional diversity would favor a student from outside the NE.)

Out in California and we got the same ^^. If it follows the rest of the schools that my son has gotten aid from, it comes with no other financial aid, so it’s still very expensive, but we look rich on paper, though the cost of living here is ridiculous.

It depends on your stats! I have a 4.0 GPA, so UConn graciously gave me $20k. Without any other aid, that already brings cost down to about $31k. I don’t think they go higher than that, but it is the most generous scholarship I’ve gotten so far out of all the New England state schools. You don’t have to be valedictorian or anything, but people towards the top of my class got between $10k and $20k in straight up merit. Best of luck!!

@MYOS1634 what is the NAAC list of colleges that miscalculated and how do I find that?

It’ll be published in about 2 weeks, around May 5. Check college confidential for info on the best colleges or go to NACAC’s website.

@MYOS1634 Thank you!

No, I heard the financial aid sucks. To be fair, though, it’s a public school in a bankrupt state … can’t blame them too much.

Connecticut is NOT bankrupt. (You may confuse it with Illinois? Kansas? Oklahoma? Those are the current states near bankruptcy).
If it doesn’t provide financial aid to OOS students it’s because it is a public university designed for its own state residents.
It’s true Connecticut doesn’t have a program for its residents, like Bright Futures like Florida, or Hope like Georgia, or the many Calgrants in California, or free tuition like NYS or Tennessee.

Alright, it’s not bankrupt; that was a stretch. But it’s definitely a mess right now.

My son appealed his aid and got $15K per year! So grateful!

I also appealed and I ended up getting a leadership scholarship for 18.5k but they took away my financial aid which was $6500 a year, but still im very happy now. I dont have to feel guilty for making my parents pay more now since cost is well in their range. @Mittens0321
