How is UConn for out of state merit aid?

How generous are they with merit aid? For some reason I didn’t think they were, but 34% of freshman are from out of state and their oos tuition isn’t very cheap. If anyone could give info it would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

If you were in the top 10% of your graduating class and had a certain SAT score…for class of 2019 the score was somewhere about 1350(m&r) you got merit aid. My daughter was in top 12%…got nothing. Got a university grant based on our efc. I know many people getting no merit $ oos. Don’t know if they got university grants based on efc like us or paid full price…I’m sure many pay full price. My daughter’s roommate is from NY…$46,000 for UConn was a bargain compared to Rutgers oos at $55,000+ according to her. I can’t believe Rutgers would be so high for oos…but it’s $31,000+ for in state.

@TLD1267 thank you. My school doesn’t report rank so do you think they will just look directly at act scores(31)?

I have been on this site for over a year…and I have looked back at threads from previous years…other people have posted about being in that position. You can search past posts on here or very simply call and ask. Everyone I, or my daughter, have ever spoken with at the university has bent over backwards to help.

@TLD1267 thank you; I will!

When my daughter applied to UCONN last year she got $12K merit scholarship but no need based aid despite the fact that we would have 2 in college this year (she chose to go to UMass Amherst instead).

My son is a rising senior at UCONN. His grades were not good enough to get merit aid but we do get a need based grant for him.

Good luck!

The most I know of is about $18000 or $20000 a year and those kids in honors mostly…

In general, all public universities are at a disadvantage to private universities with respect to merit aid they have to offer. UConn, in particular, seems to have more merit money options for IS students than OOS.

Sometimes specific departments (such as engineering, business, etc) have additional resources for offering merit aid, and those funds usually are not targeted just for IS.

My S was accepted for the fall of 2016. He did receive merit aid of $14000 a year. He was just out of the top 10% of his class. In addition, he was OOS. I think it’s possible to get some merit aid.

My D received $18,000 merit and honors OOS. Lots of extra c and music.
