UConn Special Program in Medicine

My unweighted gpa is weak, it’s only 3.607
Don’t have a weighted gpa, my school doesn’t do that. I’ve taken a lot of higher level classes, and there is a visible upward trend in my grades. Also, I have college anatomy/physiology, medical terminology, and other health science stuff like that. Also won a state award in Pathophysiology, and have a letter of rec from an oncologist I am close to (who did a BS/MD program). Non CT resident.
Ranked 76/303
SAT 1340, 720 verbal, 620 math
Volunteered in large inner city hospital 50+ hours
Certified Nursing assistant, unpaid clinical work 50 hours in assisted living facility

Do you think I have a chance for the special program? If not, do you think I have a chance at getting into undergrad at Uconn?

I applied to the program as well this year. It sounds like you have fantastic medical experience which is certainly something that will boost your chances, however from what I have gathered they are extremely stringent gradewise and are looking for near perfect test scores/gpa. I have a weighted 4.2 gpa, and have been volunteering as a certified emergency medical tech for 2.5 years (totalling to hundreds of hours of service) and a 31 ACT. But with all that I was still advised by my guidance counselor that it was a very slim chance I would be accepted. I wish you luck! It’s a great program and opportunity.

The SPIM program is amazing but this year they only 16 kids - which seems to be the norm
It’s not just about the grades, experience as well as well as the interview

Good luck
My child is in the program

Hi @jhbof3
Do you know if interview is required for UConn Special Program in Medicine? My DS has applied but has not got an interview invite yet. Are they sent out by email? Does it mean applicants who don’t receive an interview invite are not considered for admission to SPIM? If not admitted into the SPIM, are the applicants automatically considered for admission to normal Undergrad programs? Thank you.

Good morning! Yes, an interview is a major component. Last year the letters were mailed the end of January with 2 interview dates for the middle of Feb. A letter not an email was received on March 3. We were notified of the acceptance.
A few kids, I know didn’t get into Spim but are freshman right now at UConn.
When you apply for the SPIM program, I believe you applied for admissions. Did your child get into UConn? It’s a very small program. Without the program there are many different things your kid can partake in
I hope that helps. Let me know if you have additional questions

@CoolMom10 Yes interviews were sent by email and this year interviews were conducted in Febraury too. Without interview invite they will not be considered for SPIM, but they will be considered for undergrad program.
We got undergrad decision in mail yesterday.

@jhbof3 Did you get acceptance to SPIM on March 3rd last year? At the interviews we were told decisions will be out around March 10th.
Also did you mean to say there are 16 kids in your childs SPIM program?
Do you know how many students were offered acceptance?

@jhbof3 I am interested in finding out the number of students in the program this year. Most importantly I would like to know the URM representation. Do you know how many African American and how many Latino students?

That would be very interesting to know. My D applied to Uconn for the SPiM program, she didn’t get an interview.

Yes 40 kids interviewed - I think about a 1 k applied but I may be off on that number
I believe they were trying to get 20 last year but they didn’t offer more then 18-20
And there were 2 on the waiting list
They cleared and all in
There is 16 kids

They told us the same thing
March 10 or so
The letters started going out March 2 in groups.

I do know it’s heavily weighted towards CT students, Asian and Indian are highly represented. Interesting most of the kids have a parent that wasn’t born here. So first generation
I don’t know if they take them into account when interviewing.i just thought it was interesting .
How many kids were interviewed this year ?

@SleekSigma @magnetnh

@bsmdchat20
Congrats on your child’s acceptance to UConn
Did they get into the honors program as well?
I know this is a week filled with anxiousness
FYI
When the bsmd letter comes ( not email )
It is the thinnest envelope EVER

Thank you @jhbof3
My son got into the honors program.
Admission committee said they have invited 43 for SPIM interviews this year.

About 50% were out of state students at the interviews. Yes, we are anxiously waiting for the result.

Wishing your son the best of luck! Keep us posted. Does he plan on going to UConn either way. My daughter was going either way. Fingers crossed for him.

Has anybody received a letter yet?

@bsmdchat20

@hofers73 we have not received letter yet, admissions office said we should be receiving by end of this week.

@bsmdchat20
Did you get any mail from UConn today ?

@bsmdalien did you?

@hofers73
No, nothing yet

@bsmdalien same, nothing here (in state)
