UCR BioEngineering Accreditation

ABET does not not accredit my major, Bioengineering. JUst wondering if i should wait it out hoping it gets accredited by the time i graduate or should i switch to a recognized engineering like Mech? My ultimate goal is MS in BioEng and if its not accredited Grad school may be very difficult to get in.

Accreditation doesn’t have a strong importance in bioengineering, unlike other engineering majors you do not need an accredited degree to work as a bioengineer.

You definitely don’t need an accredited engineering degree to get into bioE graduate school. As an interdisciplinary field, a large percentage of bioE grad students actually have their undergraduate degrees in non-engineering sciences.

You’ll notice that a lot of top bioengineering programs aren’t Abet accredited at this point. Currently only DeVry, UCI, UCSD, and USC have accredited BioE programs in California- that means there’s a lot of highly prestigious bioE programs like the UCSF/UCB program which aren’t even accredited by Abet.

If you want to get into a good bioE grad school, work in a lab where you can get hands on experience and (hopefully) publications while you do your undergrad. Research experience is more important than whatever your major was, GPA, or anything else.
