Hi guys, so I am attending UCR as a junior and in my financial aid package from UCR so far, I've received about 10K in a "UC Riverside Grant", and while it says absolutely nothing about a Cal Grant, on the Cal Grant website it says that I am qualified for and approved for a 13K Cal Grant B. My question is, am I going to have to pick 1 or the other, or does the highest one go through, or do I get both? This will be my first time getting a Cal Grant. Thanks in advance.

Well, I know you won’t have to pick one or the other - they’ll automatically give you the most generous aid you’re eligible for. But whether or not you’ll get both . . . I just don’t know.

You may need to call the Riverside FA office on Monday and ask. Would appreciate it if you’d come back here and let us know what they say.

Cal Grant will usually cancel out any university grant. Why would they give you money when the state has a program already in place to provide it? I’ve never heard of them giving anyone a say in such matters either. You would get a say if it was Cal Grant A versus B, though.

That grant you have is likely just UCR meeting the Blue&Gold promise for you. Cal Grant B, once applied, will meet that and negate the need for the university grant. I would still call as suggested to confirm they will be updating your package to include the awarded Cal Grant B.

Blue and gold is not on top of Cal Grant, it is a supplement to it. You should still get the difference between the UC grant and the Cal Grant to cover your tuition

The Calif schools seem to stick a good-sized univ grant onto the pkg until the Cal Grant gets applied, and then the univ grant goes away. Sometimes there are other smaller univ grants that stay, but no one here can say what exactly will happen with your pkg.

crizello: Blue&Gold is a promise that systemwide fees will be met through any combination of grants and/or scholarships. As Cal Grant covers systemwide fees at UCs (and CSUs as well, but that’s a moot point for Blue&Gold), thus Blue&&Gold’s promise is met. It’s not a supplement.

The UCs make no promise to cover campus fees (although it seems like they often do for those with a very low EFC).
