UCR Discussions...

How do they set up the discussions for each lectures? And how long are classes usually?

At my CC one class averaged about 3 hours a week but we didn't have discussions.

I'm guessing the classes at UCR are also around 3 hours each and discussions are about an hour per class.

Are discussions mandatory? And do you need to take them right after your class or can you take them whenever you want during the week? I'm really not into the group studying thing and do better studying solo. So I'd rather skip an hour discussing the lecture and spend it studying myself or at work.

Once you attend BearTracks or something that shows you how to register for a class, you'll get it the quarter after :) haha.

They set up discussions based on when the TA wants to give them. Classes that meet 3 days a week are usually 1 hr long. Classes that meet 2 days a week are usually 2 (1 1/2) hrs long. Classes MTWRF or any ofthat combination are to make up 4 classes a week are usually an hr long. I find this scenario if you have a foreign language class.

Discussions are once a week.

They are "kinda" mandatory. Some TA's will take attendance so therefore it counts as part of your grade. Some TA's/Professors will require you to turn in homework in your dicussion, also forcing you to go to it :). Sometimes discussion is an essential part of your overall grade in the class. It is for your total benefit that you go to your discussion class. They usually give tips about the professor.

Then there are those cool labs that could last forever :|

where do they hold the discussions? in the library or in class rooms or where?

i'm trying to see how many hours of class time i can take daily around my work schedule.

so you only have one discussion per class per week? so if i'm taking 4 classes a semester, then i'll have only a total of 4 discussions per week right?

and what do you do in the discussions? i'm assuming there's no teacher and you just sit there and talk or listen to students talk. that must get really boring and might be counterproductive than just studying alone.

but do all classes have discussions linked to them? i'll be taking all upper division business administration courses.

and how long are the discussions usually for? an hour?

discussions = 50 minutes. someitmes you do nothing, someitmes the ta makes you do crap. it all depends.

Wait... Didn't I answer 3/4 of the questions you asked again ? :)

So you are coming from a semester system eh? Well you're gonna have fun with the quarter system ;) hahah.

There is a Teacher's Aide and that is usually a Grad student "teaching" the discussion class.

Yes almost all classes have some sort of external class than lecture.

If you do find a schedule to fit your work time, that is wonderful. It's kinda hard to do that :)
