UCR has superior WiFi and inferior server?

Someone in this forum said that of all the UC WiFis, UCR has the best WiFi network. Um.....can anyone actually explain why this is true/false?

Also, I ****ing hate growl... It's always offline! Does anyone know how reliable other UC servers are compared to the one at UCR?

I wasn’t sure about how great the UCR WiFi is compared to other UCs, but it is good. You can get online pretty much anywhere on campus, emphasis on the ON CAMPUS part.

As for Growl, it’s because they tend to shut it down for maintenance and such from what use to be midnight till around 8 am the next day but it hasn’t been like that since scheduling opened up on September 12. It changes may change but does become a problem when it’s closed and you need the information in the hours it’s closed.

UCR was the first to implement WiFi on campus. Testing began in the year 2000 and was limited to C&C (Computing and Communications) staff and special need students with laptop who had limited access to a lan line connection. In the beginning there was only access in a few labs in Bourns, inside the old commons, and near the campus student computer labs. In 2004, we were able to get a wifi signal in 90% of the campus, the places we were not able to get a signals from were spots such as the bell tower where the antennas from Watkins, Pierce, or the cafeteria just couldn’t reach because at that time we only have 802.11b/g not 802.11n and there were other hardware limitations at the time.

Other UC campuses did not start testing wifi until 2004 or so, Although I don’t have the fact on who has “better” wifi, nor do I know what “better” means to you. I do know for a fact that UCR was the first and has the most coverage and there’s a signal where you need it.

As much as people look up or down upon each others’ UC campuses, we are all still connected under the same “UC REGENTS”. In case you were wondering, all the UC’s Computing Services departments get together once a year for a conference at various UC campuses to learn from each other, UCR was the first to test and others followed, 2009 was as UC Davis ([UCCSC2009](http://uccsc2009.ucdavis.edu)) and 2010 at UCLA ([UCCSC 2010 – No Limits! — UCCSC 2010 - No Limits!](http://uccsc.ucla.edu))

Interesting facts. Thank you.

I’m glad I can play my RTS games anywhere on campus.
