Hi. I am a cc student and will apply to the UCs in the coming fall. I accidentally got a D (class is not a major requirement) in last quarter. Other than that, I got straight As and A+ (s). I will retake the course in the coming fall but at the time I apply, the D will still be counted in my GPA. I heard that we will file the grades for fall in January. By that time, I will finish retaking the class and hopefully ace it back to replace the D. So will the UCs wait until our fall grades in January to decide admission or they will knock people out when they see a "D" ? Thank you.

it’s true that you report your fall grades (last chance for GPA finalizations) in january, but for some UCs - i believe - they look at apps prior to the fall report. what i’d recommend is to note that you ARE retaking the class and intend to pass it, in your application, so they get what’s going on. there’s a HUGE disparity between your A’s and this sudden D, so it’d be nice to have an explanation, i imagine. which UCs will you be applying to?

Straight A’s and ONE sudden D… seriously dude, you are in hella lot of trouble and need some explanation to do in your essay. If you retake the class next fall and get an A, then I believe you still have a good chance at any UC… just need some reasonable excuses about that D though

Thank you very much for the advice. I am considering UC Berkeley, UCLA, and UCSD. How about USC and the other out-states colleges like UWashington, UMichigan and UVirginia? Their application deadline is around February/ March and I will have the D replaced (by hopefully an A) by that time. I guess my GPA will be 3.9x after the coming fall. Do I still have a good chance getting into those schools ?

UCs and USC: yes. The other: IDK …
Basically, once again, explain yourself. The D will not be a hindrance if you can replace it with an A/B. Your chance to all of these schools does not depend on that D, it depends on your GPA and academic preparation (= major pre-reqs), so yeah, don’t worry about it!

I’m fairly certain they wait until until Fall grades are in before they evaluate you.

Check with your CCC on whether you qualify for “academic renewal” which will replace the D with an AR on your transcript (you still have to report it, but it won’t be counted in your GPA in case you don’t repeat it). UCs will wait until after the Transfer Updates are submitted in January before doing admission evaluation.
