UC's Education Abroad Program (EAP) Anyone had experience?

Dionysus58 is right, I find that most exchange students will fall into the routine of socializing with Americans. I am on exchange right now (but not in Europe) and the exchange students just love doing American activities rather than doing the cultural immersion. For example, they would eat McDonalds at least once a day, avoid local students, and then play their own American drinking games.

BoelterHall: Thanks for the post. I have often read your posts on the UCLA page. Where are you studying abroad? Do you find that living with a host family increases the immersion experience? Are you on a UCLA EAP program? Are you studying at a University or a study center?

Yes, I am studying through EAP and living at a university hall. Living with a host family should help with language, but I am not totally sure about anything else since I don’t know anyone who has gone to Paris yet. You should keep asking around.

Generally, the amount of cultural immersion while living at the university halls will depend on how proactive you are in joining cultural activities and events on campus. Also, how well you mingle with locals. Usually the school will provide you with a local buddy who will take you around to places and help you avoid feeling homesick.

I go to ucla and am having the same dilemma as many people on here: I want to study in paris. but I’m already pretty advanced in french, and I get the impression that the only language classes offered at the uc center in paris are at the beginning/intermediate level? also, as an english major, I need to take several literature classes (they can be in french/french lit. translated), and the uc center doesn’t seem to offer that. it’s so frustrating. I’m planning on going to lyon instead, but I spent two weeks in paris this summer and really loved it.

I actually contacted someonre at the IEO (international Education Office )at UCLA and they sent me links to these others programs in Paris. One could work for the fall and is at the Sorbonne University. Check these out.

I applied for transfer in fall 2010 to the UC. When do i need to apply for EAP??? I mean, Im going to be transferring in the fall but I dont want to start a year lease if i can study abroad you know?

Go to the main UCLA website and then search for the EAP office (education abroad program). Look for the programs you like and you can find their application deadline dates. My D wants to go to France next fall (2010) and she turned hers in already although it is due in Jan. The UC fall programs are usually due in Jan. You will probably want to go abroad fall of your senior year. Or there are many fantastic summer programs all over the world. You can usually earn around 12 units for those. Just check out the site for lots of info.

most of the deadlines are in mid-January, so you won’t have to apply until a few months after transferring. it varies country to country though.

UC Center Paris for fall 2010 is already closed:( anyone have suggestions on other programs in Paris? There’s a lot of programs, but I’m not sure if they’re exactly all that great

Here is a link that I found on CC-- it has been helpful to me in narrowing down the programs in Spain.

Class of 07 and CKG: Update. My daughter who was one of the first to get her completed application in for the UC Center in Paris for this fall was accepted for the program. But just found out yesterday that since she is currently enrolled in French 5 she is now ineligible. She either misunderstood the language requirement or the info given to her was not clear. So we are busy looking for another program.

Since she has now had “too much French” we are looking at programs through API and ISA. Also talked to someone at an organization called AbroadCo. They all have great programs in Paris this fall. Most are at French Universities but you can still take some electives in English if you want. So there are programs out there and the application deadline is not until June 1. So just google ISA Paris, etc and you will find lots of info.

^Thanks for the update inquiringmind2! I was actually first on the waiting list, so I guess that means I’m getting bumped up. I’m sorry to hear about your daughter being ineligible for the program. Update us on what your daughter chooses, since I’m not looking into other programs as well!

^sorry, i mean’t looking into other programs!

classof07: My daughter is meeting with the head of the International Study office at school today. They are going to go over her options. Now that we have had to face looking for another program we have both been doing lots of research. She is very interested in a program with ISA. She would attend the Catholic University of Paris and would take French lang. classes and electives either in English or French. She is now thinking seriously about minoring in French since all of her classes there could go towards the minor provided she takes the electives in French. Google ISA for more info. It might work out really well for her. She would be going to a French University with French students but would be with other Americans in her French classes. I think it will give her a broader experience as she will meet more French students and American students from all over the US, not just CA. The only drawback is that 3 of her best friends are going on the UC EAP program. She can still get together and socialize/travel with them but it won’t be quite the same. I will let you know what she decides. But unless something changes you will move up on the waiting list! You might try to meet with Mr. Vito Grillo in the International Education office for some ideas. Also you could google Study Abroad Paris and get tons of info. Try organizations like ISA, API, CIEE, etc. there are so many and you can go there just as easily as the UC Center program. Most have app deadlines of June 1.

^thanks for the advice! i’ll definitely look into those programs:) and by any chance, do you know which program has the most people?

I have no idea. If you have a specific question I would just call the number provided on the websites where it says “contact us”. I called one company when we first started looking at other programs and got to speak to the director of programs who was full of good info.
