UCs + UChic + JHU + USC + Emory; chance me!

UCLA is probably my top choice, but here's the entire list, in no particular order.

1) UCLA
2) UCSD
3) UC Berkeley
4) USC
5) Johns Hopkins
6) Univ of Chicago
7) Emory University
8) UC Davis
9) UC Irvine
10) UC Santa Barbara

And yes, I do live in California.

Which ones are safeties, matches, or reaches?

Academics:

According to the UC system of weighting, sophomore weighted GPA was a 3.8 (UW was 3.6), but all of my 5 core classes were either Honors or APs (2 Aps, 3 Honors). This year, with 4 AP's and 1 Honors, I'm shooting for at least a 4.2 so hopefully my overall sophomore and junior year weighted cumulative GPA will be a 4.0. By senior year I will have taken about 10 AP classes, 7 Honors classes, and 1 Accelerated class throughout my high school career.

I have been on principal's honor roll thus far.

My school doesn't rank us but I'm positive im in the top 10% of my class.

Tests:

Until now I've taken the SAT once and my score was 2240. (730 critical reading, 740 math, 770 writing)
I'm planning on retaking it just once more and hopefully I will break 2300.
I'm also planning to take the ACT sometime, and I will take the SAT Subject Tests this year.

Extracurriculars:

Sports:
I've been playing volleyball for the last 6 years, and the last three years I played for a club team, though I did not play for my school. I was setter, and though we didn't have an official captain, the setter is usually the one that is most like a captain. I was also on the cross country team at school freshman year.

Other Extracurriculars:
I was in the choir at school freshman year. We participated in competitions and usually received the score "Superior."

I've also been part of the newspaper for the past 2 years, and have participated in math league exams for the past 3.

I'm currently peer tutoring the subjects of Spanish and Geometry to two younger students at my school.

Clubs: Cultural Club, Math Club, Service Club, CSF, NHS. I do not hold leadership positions in any of these, but attend meetings regularly.

Volunteer work:
I've worked at various places, including a children's day camp, a center where I served food, a hospital, a nonprofit organization that organizes food drives and clothing drives to donate to the needy, etc.
In addition, this summer I will be going on an immersion trip for a few weeks to a foreign country, visiting orphanages, etc. with my class, after studying the history and social justice issues of that country for an entire school year.
I also won a community service award.

I would say that by the end of SR year, I will have completed about 300+ hours.

Miscellaneous:
--CA resident
--attending a college-prep private high school
--fluent in 2 languages including English, and have a basic understanding of 2 others (including Spanish)

That's all I can think of for now! I'm just so worried that my semi-low GPA will affect my chances. What do you think?? Which ones are safeties and matches, and which are reaches??

Thanks!!

You have an excellent shot at all of them. Good luck!

thanks!

anyone else??? i am totally desperate here

your gpa is a little low for ucla and johns hopkins.
u chicago is a low reach.
you're in everywhere else.
good luck!!
chance me?

Seeing as you have no subject test scores and you're a junior.
And the fact that you currently have a 0.0 for the second semester of your junior year.
I'd have to say reject at all.

well it can't really hurt to be thinking ahead, can it? jeez.

bumpbumpbump

It cant hurt to be thinking ahead, incase you want to edit your list or step it up a notch to have a better chance based off of people's advice. A sophomore making a thread would be thinking too far ahead.

Johns Hopkins will be really hard because they value GPA above all other, so will UCB, and U Chic, other than those i think you're probably in everywhere else.

1) UCLA
2) UCSD
3) UC Berkeley
4) USC
5) Johns Hopkins
6) Univ of Chicago
7) Emory University
8) UC Davis
9) UC Irvine
10) UC Santa Barbara

bump........

1) UCLA - safe as long as you keep GPA at 4.0 weighted
2) UCSD - SAFE
3) UC Berkeley - low reach
4) USC- SAFE
5) Johns Hopkins - low reach (boost that GPA, and aim to take Math IIc SAT II)
6) Univ of Chicago - 70% very close reach
7) Emory University - medium reach (really look at GPA)
8) UC Davis - SAFE
9) UC Irvine -SAFE
10) UC Santa Barbara -Safety Safe Safe

UCLA isn't safe. You need to improve your GPA. Same for Berkeley, as an instate candidate admissions at the schools are about equal. You should be fairly safe for all of the other UC's plus USC.

Since nobody else has mentioned this, I should point out that UC's do not consider class rank (it's not on the application). There's also a limit to what you can put for EC's, so you probably want to focus on quality rather than quantity.

Good luck.
