<p>Just read this thread. I wanted to respond to the question regarding opportunities for non-music majors at UCLA. S has a friend who plays French horn. He plays in the symphony and auditioned to be a music major for his junior year (he was denied admission). S has a friend who is a trumpet player. She says she can't get into the symphony or other ensembles because of the music majors. She plays in the band. She's pre-med anyway, so although she misses playing in the symphony, she's ok with the options. They might need horn players more than trumpet players, which makes opportunities for horn-playing non-music majors better than those for trumpet-playing non-music majors.
I didn't know that if one is denied admission to the music school at UCLA, that he is also denied admission to the university. S plays trumpet, however, and wouldn't want to attend a school that won't let him play in the trumpet studio or symphony, so I guess it's a non-issue for us.
