I should probably also add this.
<a href=“America’s 25 Most Crime-Rattled Colleges, From Yale to Duke (PHOTOS)”>America’s 25 Most Crime-Rattled Colleges, From Yale to Duke (PHOTOS);
UCSB is on it (19/25)… Rated as less dangerous than Yale, Upenn, and 16 others. Harvard is also on the list.

I did read those stories about the Isla Vista rapes (none were on campus). I was shocked. However, as far as I could tell all those events concerned women walking alone in the early morning hours (2 a.m. or so) in deserted bushy areas between Isla Vista and UCSB, after parties. Don’t walk there alone at 2 am would be a good step to take, imho. There IS an escort service for students. Maybe it would be a good idea for the school to make it clear the escort service is NOT looking for underaged drinking as well, to take away any hesitancy a partier might feel in calling them. I was pissed when UCSB paid for temporary surveillance cameras for the weekend of Deltopia to film people’s private parties in their yards (which I find offensive), instead of putting the cameras in those secluded locations where those girls had been attacked…if they were going to have cameras.

However, this anti rape campaign by UCLA shows clearly that UCSB is not an unusual target for this behavior. http://swc.ucla.edu/7000insolidarity/ In fact, I suspect those women were walking alone at that time near UCSB because they felt safe doing so, because of how safe the area generally is.

And the Cal Poly student found dead is believed by the police to have fallen by accident.

@CultClassic, Thanks for posting that.

I suspect that those ratings will probably change a little now dontcha think?

Now, allow me to say this.

Firstly, my prayers and thoughts pour out endlessly to everyone who was affected by this horrific incident. I literally had tears watching the news.

Now about UCSB and Isla Vista. In spite of my very negative attitude toward Isla Vista, I think UCSB is an outstanding academic institution. It’s absolutely one of the best imo. My daughter loves it there and is doing very well - knock on wood. However, I think Isla Vista is bad news for UCSB students…too much riff raff condensed in such a very small area during weekends and social events.

My analogy and my take on Isla Vista is this: It’s like a young man dating the sweetest, nicest, most beautiful girl on campus whom he knows has a venereal disease. The young man represents the students of UCSB; UCSB is the beautiful girl; and Isla Vista’s social scene is the vd. As long as the young man stays away from engaging in certain activities, he’ll never contract the vd…he’ll be fine. In other words, If UCSB students stay away from Isla Vista’s social scene, they’ll be fine, generally speaking. If there is a need to go there to get supplies or a bite to eat, never go late at night, go with someone and then get out as soon as you’re done.

Just my opinion.

just to add a touch of balance to the “Isla Vista is terrible” meme.

Thank you for posting that, CV. Awesome stuff.

All the UCs are having memorials. UC Berkeley is having one tomorrow. UCLA had one last night., that is really sweet,

I really like this essay by a former student: “Paradise Lost?”

Her time there included drugs, mine didn’t, but boy do I recognize her description of the place I went to school, even if the social selection I made from the smorgasbord there was different than hers. http://rooftoprevolutionaries.sharedby.co/OHY93t
