Hey guys. So I’m currently a student at UCSB as an Actuarial Science major, but I want to major in CS. I’m currently trying to switch here but it doesn’t look too good. I was wondering how UC’s handle transfers from other UC’s? My GPA isn’t the greatest and I’ve taken all my GE’s P/NP so I dont even know if they’ll transfer. I was thinking of dropping out and going to a CC to fix GPA and apply next year or should I apply this year and stick it out here for another year? Any advice would be appreciated.
It’s not clear that you can “fix your gpa” since they will look at all the classes you’ve ever taken. You need to be careful about the unit cap for transfers since many UCs have limits on high-unit junior or senior xfers. They add all UC units to what you earn at a CC so if you stick out 1 more year at UCSB then go to a CC you will be over the cap for many UCs. If your “GPA isn’t the greatest” then you ought to talk with the undergrad CS advisor to see if there is even a chance of you being accepted or if your GPA is simply too low.
You apply as a Jr and compete with all of the other transfer applicants. Getting in someplace ‘better’ like UCSD or UCLA will require the right mix of classes and a GPA around 3.8.
Where do you want to go?
