Hey everyone! I’m planning on majoring in IR. I was accepted to the UCSB Global studies program as well as the GWU Elliot School of International Affairs. I know the Elliot school is ranked much higher, but I’m planning on going to law school after this, and I love the UCSB vibe. I was just wondering if anybody had any advice for my decision (students, admitted ppl, etc)
My D has the same situation for starting in 2015 and she debated it for a bit and has sent in her acceptance to UCSB. Primary reasons similar to what you cite: UCSB vibe - student body/culture, location a much better personality fit with the school (she visited both schools). UCSB’s lower ranking in international studies vs GWU somewhat offset by its higher overall reputation as a school including strong connected programs in environment studies, sociology and a research focus - which should still allow her to go on to a top notch graduate program (MA/JD). She will have to be more of a self starter when it comes to internships vs GWU. Would love to hear the POV of other UCSB global studies majors on the decision and any guidance for incoming freshmen to get the most out of the UCSB GS program.
