UCSB vs. UMiami

Okay right now these are my 2 favorite schools. I am instate for UCSB, but with the generous scholarships and financial aid at UM I believe they may end up costing around the same.

So can you please give me a list of pros/cons of both schools.

UCSB Pros- Pretty! Decent Academics! IV! Hot people! Beach!

UCSB Cons- IV.

UM- Florida. That is all.

I just looked at your profile. You were born in 1990.

OH GOD.

I feel so. Old.

Where is my cane?

UCSB has better academics overall IMO.

And what are you basing this opinion on? SAT score ranges? ACT score ranges? Incoming GPA? In that case, you would find that Miami slightly edges UCSB and the difference is neglible. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if UM surpassed UF in the next few years. It's becoming increasingly more competitive and selective (especially the way it throws around merit money to top candidates). This decision should be based on fit

UCSB offers great weather, decent academics, but is widely known within CA as one of the top 2 or 3 schools to go to if you want a party school. It doesn't carry a lot of weight (IMHO) in the working world really anywhere. Miami probably edges it out in academic consideratios, carries more weight in the working world (but mainly in the East and South but at least it has some weight) and is a rising college academically and reputation wise. Being from CA, you have a significant financial advantage in choosing UCSB, but Miami is giving out a LOT of scholarships for high academics as a way to attract high ranking students to continue to raise their standing. If you are a great student and can do really well on the SAT, you can get great money.

Within the next 3 years Miami will easily be a top 50 school and will probably be a top 45 school.

I know UCSB is ranked higher, but I would go with Miami assuming the price is around the same. Reason why...

A) UM has people from all over the US, while UCSB is FIVE percent out of state!! 5%!! Miami is 45% non-floridians!
B) It seems to me like UCSB has a little bit more of a commuter school feel
C) People outside of Florida know that Miami is a good school, while I guarantee you ALOT of people outside of Cali wouldn't know what the acronym UCSB stands for.
D) Miami has a very very very good athletics program, while UCSB will never ever make a bowl game in football. School athletics means alot more than people give it credit. It's tons of fun.
E) Miami is one of the best places to be as a college student if you're into the club scene.

Both are great, but I would go with Miami.
