Hello all, I was just wondering what the general opinion on military veterans going to school at UCSC was. I still have about a year left on my 4-year enlistment with the air force, I'm a meteorologist so my job doesn't involve much violence. I know UCSC is known for being anti-military(ex:banning recruiters), and a very liberal school as well. I myself am a liberal and an athiest too, just wondering if anybody that has been at UCSC for a year or so would know what the general attitude towards veterans would be and if this attitude would be significant enough to where I would be better off going to a different college. Thanks!

I have never seen anyone give a veteran a hard time. It doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen, but it’s something that can happen anywhere. I just haven’t seen it myself yet.

UCSC is, in my experience, one of the most accepting places of anyone from any walk of life. There are always exceptions, though. My experience is only those who come in with a chip on their shoulder tend to antagonize animosity, though. Note this goes for everyone including those who you think could take issue with your service.

Anywho, yes, many students at UCSC do not approve of active recruiting on campus, but, from what I can tell, that is seen as a whole different colored horse compared to someone who actually served. It’s the difference between someone trying to coerce you into something and someone who made a choice for themselves.

The few who might take issue (and you will find them any college you go to) are not worth the effort to argue with. You’re not going to have parades of people scorning you because you chose to serve if that’s what you’re worried about ;)
