UCSC financial aid packages for out of state applicants

When can I expect to get the financial aid package from UCSC? It is not leaving us much time to make a decision between this and others schools that my daughter has been accepted to.

The UC’s usually post it to the web portal either at the same time as admissions or within a few days. Sometimes you have to hunt around a bit but I’m surprised it isn’t already linked.

Check the UCSC forum. They’re really slow this year, apparently it may have something to do with a strike. We’re waiting too…

http://www2.ucsc.edu/finaidcalc/calculator/</a> can give you an estimate.

It indicates that the likely out-of-state net price will be approximately
FAFSAEFC + ESC + OOSEXTRA_TUITION.

ESC = $9,900 (expected student work earnings and loans)
OOSEXTRATUITION = $22,878

^

So figure…

EFC + $23k + full student loans/WS

So, if EFC = $10k…then…

$10k + $23k + $10k of loans/WS…so maybe a small grant.

that said, I do wonder where the UCs get all of their WS from. Other state schools often have to limit their WS to Pell students only. (I know its fed aid, but how do the UCs get more than others??)

UMich also put WS on my D’s FA but she is not Pell student. A couple other schools too. Nevertheless, the FA officer told us a couple times at HS meetings before that do not count on the WS money. It is not there unless you find the job to earn for it.

I’m not aware that some schools have to limit WS to Pell students. My kid’s state schools (not in CA) haven’t.

I discovered at an OOS Accepted Students Reception this week that UCSC does not send out FA awards until the student/family accepts enrollment at the school! You have to complete the SIR and pay a nonrefundable fee. Does not make any sense at all. I emailed staff in the Financial Aid office and they responded saying they would be able to come up with a tentative FA package for us prior to May 1.

What? How do they expect you to decide if they went even tell you how much it will cost? I’m so glad I saw this because my son has been waiting for the UCSC package to make his decision. We figured we probably can’t afford it (we’re OOS), but wanted to wait and be sure. That’s just lame… I think I’ll just suggest that he stop waiting and enroll at another school where he got good FA. Really don’t want to deal with the CA government anyway. Well, will probably call to confirm this first, I guess.

Is your D getting FWS? For a school the size of UM, it would not be unusual to have work study (especially non FWS) in the financial aid package. It does not take anything from the school to offer work study, because there is not money going out until the student actually finds and works the job.

That seems like a really dumb policy, especially since UC financial aid offers are rather trivial to calculate (see <a href=“UCSC financial aid packages for out of state applicants - #4 by ucbalumnus - Financial Aid and Scholarships - College Confidential Forums”>UCSC financial aid packages for out of state applicants - #4 by ucbalumnus - Financial Aid and Scholarships - College Confidential Forums; ).

Called the UCSC FA office just now and got the scoop. A “conditional” or “preliminary” offer should go out this week (week of 4/7), even if the offer of admission has not yet been accepted. This is “for the purpose of comparing colleges.” The “official” offer will not go out until admission has been accepted (that must have been what @SESeattle was referring to).

So if you’re waiting for the “preliminary” offer, hang in there, I was told by the FA office that it should be coming this week.
