UCSC Literature Major with Creative Writing Emphasis

Hi I am hoping to transfer to UCSC but currently am diliberating between UCSC and UCR. How is UCSC's Creative Writing program, I am aspiring to become a fiction writer. I know UCR's program is great but I would like to hear about UCSC's. Any other reasons I should transfer to UCSC or not would be great. I am also majoring in Theatre Design, with an emphasis in Costuming.
Thanks

I already replied to your post in the older thread before I saw this one. However, I didn’t notice you mention the Theatre Arts part which changes my response a little.

The concentration you’re interested in is impacted at UCSC and the entire department is highly regarded.

The Theatre Arts program is incredible and I have been told it is on par with UCLA’s. We have the benefit of having Shakespeare Santa Cruz as a potential summer internship to learn from. Several of our staff are working professionals in various areas including the costuming you mention.

However, we do not have a costuming emphasis. The closest would be the technical emphasis. It is not important nor required to pick an emphasis in the Theatre Arts major at UCSC. It is required to pick a concentration, though, in the Literature major. A friend of mine chose to go to a college out of state specifically so she could major in Theatre Arts with an emphasis on costuming (she received significant merit aid to attend).

While double majors are more than possible at UCSC, the Theatre Arts major and the Creative Writing concentration for the Literature major are very difficult to do simultaneously. The scheduling for the classes often conflict and there are fewer options/flexibility for classes in the Creative Writing concentration than there are with any other Literature concentration.

I am a Literature (pre- and early-modern concentration, but redeclaring as an intensive concentration) and Theatre Arts major myself. I was a Creative Writing concentration and could not get my classes to work because of the scheduling conflicts I mentioned. I still have several conflicts, but it is much more manageable now. I am have to take an average of 20 units every quarter (including a summer session of 20 units) so that I can graduate within the estimated amount of time given to junior transfers. Both the Lit and Theatre Arts department allow very few units to transfer to meet lower division requirements needed to declare.
