Which is the...best UC for creative writing?

I'm a business major at a canadian uni (eh?) and am hoping to transfer to a US university to something I actually love. If I could complete a double major (business & Creative Writing) using my current business credits well that would just be swell.

Berkeley seems to have a lock on its door (the requirements for Haas transfer are ridiculously unachievable if you're not from California)

UCLA and Irvine also have solid English programs. UCSC and Davis might be runner ups in this case.

This is just a shot in the dark here but given it's location (LA for Pete's sake) does UCLA offer a lot of connections to the hollywood film and television industry (ex. internship programs/competitions/etc...) or is just a misconception from outsiders?

The English major is slightly different from Creative Writing. Within the English department, there are specializations or concentrations:

UCLA Department of English : Academics : Undergraduate Program

UCLA Department of English

It's very difficult to get into the creative writing workshops/classes at UCLA. I think you should research more options in case your CW plans fall through. Look at the Schedule of Classes

UCLA Registrar's Office Home

And under the English courses for Fall 2007, Winter 2008, or previous terms, look at the upper-division courses designated Creative Writing. You'll see that they're tiny classes. It's a highly selective process. Email the English department for further questions. I don't know the statistics of the # of people admitted to the workshops. It's really hard, that's all.

Ah, and it's competitive to do Business-Economics here at UCLA, as well.

Thanks. How can it be tough to sign up for creative writing courses and workshops? If you're admitted and a full-time student isn't it just a question of signing up for the class while there's still space?

Yes, you have to be admitted to the workshops. A full-time student cannot just waltz into the course. Specific times during the year is one able to apply for creative writing workshops/classes.

That's...odd. What is workshop admissions based on?

i don't think ucla has a CW major, only an english major while other UCs actually have english major w/ a CW emphasis...

English major with creative writing emphasis. Look at the link!

It's based upon writing samples, by the way.
