Hey guys, new member here and it looks like a lot of the regs on these forums are really helpful. So basically I was rejected from Berkeley for Econ, which was my choice university. I'm a bit surprised but I don't think it's a big deal, so now I have to choose between UCSC and UCSB for the Econ major, or for UCLA for the Italian major.

I applied to UCLA for Italian because I knew it would be impossible to get into their econ department since I don't have the right pre-reqs, so I'm not sure if I should consider UCLA over UCSC or UCSB for my major of choice.

From the looks of it all three colleges seem amazing, visually and socially i'd be more than happy at either one of them, so that's not the issue. I just want to get as much benefit out of a degree as possible. If any of you had to choose from those three, what would it be and why? Biased opinions are welcomed as I'd like to hear the positives from someone who is, or who has, attended one of these universities.

Thanks~

Just to clarify Economics is my preferred major, but I’m considering Italian since I do plan on going to graduate school for business or economics. Thanks guys.

that’s hard to say, since both of those majors don’t have anything to do with one another. Don’t forget you could always minor…

I would do econ & accounting at UCSB. Unless you really love Italian.

my Italian professor graduated from UCLA and he is amazing.

take that comment as unbiased because I am having trouble choosing between Berkeley and UCLA myself.

Ok well suppose I had to pick Econ between UC Santa Barbara and UC Santa Cruz? Any better choice between the two?

santa barbara would be the better choice, maybe i am a bit biased, but i suppose not… ucsb’s econ is more established.

i would agree with desetak about UC Santa Barbara and add that it is higher ranked overall.

leave rankings aside…and UC Santa Barbara has a better looking campus and a totally cool vibe.

Well not to be a downer or anything, but it won’t really matter where you go if you are going to just study Italian in terms of job prospects.

I would say that UCSB econ looks much better than at UCSC, in every aspect.

I disagree, UCSC has an amazing campus… but ya UCSB has the better economics program and if you want to do accounting or something the big 4 recruit heavily there.

if you choose UCLA you could finish your prereqs there and then switch into the Math/Economics program which is really good for graduate school economics (more math/application work) math/economics isnt impacted
