Well UCSC looks like where I'll will be transferring this winter, and I just wanted to get some thoughts and comments by people who have attended UCSC preferably. Mainly about their experience and whether or not they would recommend transferring to the institution. Also the pros and cons of the college would be great. I've seen a lot of negative comments about UCSC and I just wanted to get the perspective of people who have actually been there.

I’ve visited a few times…

Pro’s: Beautiful campus surrounded by redwoods. The campus is really hilly and sprawling. Located near the beach (kind of). Downtown Santa Cruz is fun and has a fair amount of things to do during the weekends. Only 90 miles from San Francisco. Psych, biology, sociology, and literature are all strong majors there.

Con’s: No sports teams really, a lot of the students have a very relaxed attitude towards school. There is not as much competition academically compared to the other uc’s (which may be good or bad for you). There isn’t a lot of school spirit and the vast majority of students are liberal (once again may be good or bad). Also … you should be 420 friendly since the majority of the student body smokes.

It’s a shame that they have no sports teams. They have like the best mascot ever.

Light(en) up and enjoy.

I go to Berkeley but my trips to visit friends there were always awesome. Nice place, good atmosphere, have a good time.

* It’s a shame that they have no sports teams. They have like the best mascot ever. *

Sure they do… They’re a Division III Independent.

Well thanks for the input, the only thing that worries me about the school is the relaxed academic attitude that you guys have mentioned because I’m a pretty serious student. I don’t mind liberal minded students and don’t mind weed so thats not a problem. And then again just because everybody else has a relaxed academic attitude doesn’t mean I have to too. I go to a community college I’m used to people not caring about school lol.

I think if you are a serious student, you will most likely meet other serious students at ucsc. The entire student population isn’t indifferent about school. It’s just not the same educational and competitive environment that absolutely exists at the majority of the uc’s.
