Can someone explain to me how UCSD admits people? I’ve heard rumors that they use some type of point system that the other UCs do not, is this true? Because I would say maybe 2-3 from my high school got in with lower test scores (I’m talking 26/27 ACT compared to the 30 avg. of UCSD) and slightly lower GPAs, nor did they have crazy special extracurriculars, so I’m curious how it works. (I got in)
The UC’s have an UC score or Eligilbity index they use to screen in-coming Freshman to make sure all UC requirements are met. http://www.viewpoint.org/ftpimages/102/download/download_group1327_id327678.pdf
If you read the UC website, there are 14 areas of criteria that the UC’s use for admissions decisions. Much is based on GPA/Test scores but EC’s, essay, personal challenges, special talents are also considered. This is why the UC’s can be unpredictable at times.

UCSD used to have a points system few years ago. They have since stopped using it but it could be that they are still using it in conjunction to a more “holistic” approach. Also UCSD admit by major, so it’s possible that somebody can be admitted with a lower UC GPA and SAT/ACT scores if they applied to a non-impacted major.
UCSD does not admit by major or by choice of college within the school. Applicants must exceed the minimum UC requirements to be considered, but admissions officers will consider the essays and EC’s along with GPA and test scores.
