Hi, I got accepted by UCSD for management science major and will transfer there from this fall quarter. I would like to change my major to math/comsc and wanna know by when I have to declare my major and how I can do that. Do I only need to finish lower division classes for math/comsc and then I can submit the paper for changing major?
Is that the same as Math-CS (Math-Computer Science)? Unfortunately, in June of this year, all math majors at UCSD became capped. When you have completed the required lower division courses with the required GPA, you can use the Major/Minor tool on Triton Link to apply to change your major. Since the major is capped, only a limited number of continuing student applicants will be accepted into the major.
Thank you! How long will it usually take to know if I can get accepted or not after I submit paper documents?
https://www.math.ucsd.edu/programs/undergraduate/Entry_to_the_Math_Majors.pdf indicates that all math majors at UCSD have competitive admission to change into. Minimum college GPA in prerequisite courses is 2.5, but the threshold for admission may be substantially higher. You may want to ask the department what past thresholds were.
The rapid increase in enrollment that is overflowing the department’s capacity is likely due to all of the rejects from the CS major trying to get into one of the math majors as a “backup” major. The CS major is reputedly highly competitive to get into; http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/university-california-san-diego/1881773-this-quarter-you-needed-a-4-0-to-transfer-into-cs-at-ucsd.html claims that a 4.0 college GPA was needed to get into the CS major.
Looks like you don’t submit paper documents, since the Major/Minor tool is online. With uncapped majors, the instructions say allow 3-5 days to hear from them. With capped majors, I don’t know how long you wait. (By the way, capped used to be called “impacted” until recently.)
