UCSD OR UCD (pre-pharmacy)

which school would be a better fit for pre-pharmacy? i got into thurgood marshall at ucsd for pharmacological chemistry. And i got into the chemistry major at uc davis. which would be a better fit in terms of going on to a pharmacy school?

Well, the classes are the same regardless of campus and the major itself is just a fancy title. You’re required to take a pharmacology/toxicity class as well as econ at UCSD and you’ll be required to take an extra quarter of physical chemistry with the chemistry major at UCD. If you’re looking at classes, the difference between the campuses is negligible. Google for the major requirements if you need proof.

However: UCSD actually has a pharmacy school (and a good one too!), meaning that there are plenty of research opps that can help you build up your resume and decide on a particular specialty if that’s what you want. This being a UCSD forum and me being a happy UCSD alum, I’ll tell you that my greatest move as a senior in high school was picking UCSD over UCD (which is 20 mins from my house and where both my parents are alums). UCSD has the beach, no cows, no springtime allergies, shiny new lab facilities, big-name research (both on-campus and off-campus, lots of internship opportunities available for anyone who looks for it), yummy Mexican food, and was far far away from home.

Half my chemistry friends went into pharmacy school. They’re all very happy right now, and all have job placements ranging from Kaiser SD to Stanford.

UCSD also has the Seven-Year B.S./Pharm.D. Program, if you’re interested in that.

It’s a shame that you didn’t apply to University of the Pacific for their accelerated pre-pharmacy program. :frowning: You would have been an easy shoe in and their program is actually very good.

I have been a pharmacist for over 20yrs in california, and to be truthful the profession is getting saturated. there are too many pharmacy schools & there are too many kids wanting to go into the field. If you want to go into a profession where you want to get a job in 4-6 years, you should really consider another healthcare field.

This question is so relevant to what I’m going through! I got accepted to Marshall as a Chem major too but declined it to go to Davis as a chem major also (planning on doing pharmaceutical chem).

@Rx2362, Do you know any science field that is growing within the next couple of years?? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!! I’m super confused about what I want to do with a chem major.

^ it’s really premature to be thinking about something like that. as you take more classes and gain more experience, your interests should guide you towards something that’s fulfilling for YOU.

@astrina, I’m a transfer student, so I’m pretty set on doing something in the science field :). I would love to work in research! but I know it’s pretty tough :</p>

how early can we start working in research. And how does it kinda work [is there a process, application, etc.]

there aren’t any set rules. if a professor’s willing to take you, you’re in. but most will prefer that you’ve taken the basic lab courses so you don’t do stupid stuff.

folks usually just start emailing professors. but keep in mind that they get deluged with dozens of the same emails, so either write a good letter or target the professors who need all the help they can get (ie, brand-new assistant professors)

I heard USC has good pharmacy school as well as UCSF.
