The UCSD website says that in order to be considered for a regents scholarship an applicant must submit a FAFSA. This seems to differ from a lot of the other UCs which do not require the FAFSA. Does anyone know more about this?

All UCs require FAFSA for regents scholarships…sort of a different type of scholarship. First part is based on merit and second part is based on need. For example I got the regents scholarship at UCR for $5000. That is all I get because of my family income. If my family income was really low the regent’s scholarship could actually make up the difference for my full tuition

Thanks for the response. In reviewing the other UC websites I did not see the FAFSA requirement so I was wondering.

Actually, I don’t think that is entirely right. I believe FAFSA is required only to show demonstrated need and receive more than the $2,000 a year award. If no demonstrated need (either because FAFSA showed no need or FAFSA not filed), then the Regents scholar at UCSD receives the minimum. At least that’s how I read [Regents Scholarships](http://www.ucsd.edu/current-students/finances/financial-aid/types/scholarships/freshmen/regents-scholarships.html).

That’s how I read it also.

My mom works in financial aid and she says you should always fill out FAFSA regardless of income. If someone loses their job or someone gets sick or anything that changes income you need to have FAFSA in place. She just worked with a student who father died. They had filed their FAFSA did not recieve anything and now she is getting almost tuition paid because they are adjusting her income on her submitted FAFSA form

They called me yesterday to tell me i was accepted.

@clowie congrats! i really want to get regents for ucsd but im not sure what my chances are. fingers crossed!

i know the FAFSA is required for the UCSD regents scholarships, but i don’t remember reading that as a requirement for any other UCs

does anyone know how many people get picked as regents scholars for ucsd?

I got Regents too. The volunteer who called me to tell me I was accepted said UCSD accepts several hundred Regents scholars a year. Good luck!

@swimstar congrats! and thanks for the info

Do you know how they go about accepting their Regents Scholars aside from high GPA?

Are there any out of state students that received Regents?
