UCSD straight B's chance me!!

Hi, I’m an Asian-American female from suburban MA and I love UCSD and would love to apply for '24.

Stats:
UC GPA (self-calculated, but it should be right) is capped and weighted 3.59 and weighted is a 3.98. My high school GPA is a 4.1 W and 3.7 UW, but my HS calculates GPA a little differently so please that with a grain of salt! I know that it is done differently than most other schools and that it “doesn’t line up” with my grades, which are mostly B’s with occasional A’s in primarily the most rigorous honors and AP classes that my high school offers.
SAT: 1520 (760 V/760 M) and a 22 on the essay (8-6-8). I took this August 2018, which is the summer before junior year. I haven’t taken the ACT and probably won’t take either standardized tests again.
APs: Chinese, taken sophomore year - 5. Junior: APUSH (taken in school), macro, micro, and US Gov and Politics (self study). Senior: Pysch, IR, maybe French, AB calc, Enviro

My EC’s:
debate captaincy and student journalism leadership for 2 years, won various awards on a local and regional level
started my own business - summer camps - summers before junior and senior year
got various office internships related to business the summer before my junior year
was on a cultural council for my high school
founded community elementary education program

Thanks! Let me know if you have any questions, and I appreciate the help.

Also, I know that that’s not technically straight B’s but I know that a lot of other people are looking for that sort of headline and hoped it would help

Since you are OOS, you will be paying $65K/year to attend UCSD with no financial aid, so before you fall in love, check with your parents if they are willing to pay that amount.

UC’s tend to be very GPA focused so your grades are going to hurt your chances even with a great SAT score. For schools like UCSD, the average UC GPA for 2018 was a 4.0+. Do you have a reason for the lower than average grades? If so it can be addressed in your personal insight essay and maybe it can help your chances.

UC’s like all top schools want to see rigorous HS schedule but they also want to see more A’s than B’s in these courses.

Intended major?

I would not focus on a top UC like UCSD since as noted below, your chances are not the best. UC Merced, Riverside and Santa Cruz are more line with your GPA. Also look at the top Cal states such as Cal Poly SLO (depends upon major), San Diego State, CSU Long Beach, CSU Fullerton and San Jose State. Since they admit based mainly on stats, your SAT makes up the the lower GPA but again you would be full pay at around $36-40K/year for the Cal states.

Here is some UC admit data based on the capped weighted UC GPA and not major specific:

Freshman admit rates for UC GPA of 3.40-3.79:

UCB: 1.8%
UCLA: 2.2%
UCSD: 7.2%
UCSB: 10.1%
UCI: 11.1%
UCD: 16.6%
UCSC: 43.8%
UCR: 63.3%
UCM: 88.7%

2018 UC capped weighted GPA averages:
UCB: 4.23
UCLA: 4.23
UCSD: 4.16
UCSB: 4.13
UCI: 4.13
UCD: 4.11
UCSC: 3.96
UCR: 3.81
UCM: 3.71

Best of luck and apply to UCSD but consider it a Reach school.

Your personal statements are very important. Last year many high-achieving students did not get into UCD or UCI (which should have been safety schools because of their GPA)

I got into UCSD with a 3.7, 1010 SAT, 22 ACT (very low) but extraordinary personal statements and amazing extracurriculars. And a full ride. And a capped major (Neurobiology, 1st choice)

Let me know if you have any questions.
