UCSD V.S. Penn State, Purdue

Hi, I got into these 3 schools, and I'm having a hard time deciding. I want my major to have something to do with mathematics, like accounting or actuarial science. I love San Diego, but I'm worried if UCSD is strong in my major. Please help me......

I don’t think Purdue is stronger than UCSD in math. Not sure about Penn State.

@DrGoogle‌, is UCSD strong in theoretical math or accounting? :)

I don’t think UCSD has accounting(at least I’m not aware of). I checked the Grad rankings for Math, I didn’t see either Purdue nor Penn State. For math, theoretical computer is the closest to theoretical math. I think UCSD ranks much higher than UCLA in this area. But there was no such specialty on the grad rankings, so I don’t know if that is what you are asking.

Here is a break down per specialty for Math category
Algebra / Number Theory / Algebraic Geometry - not in top 10
Analysis - not in top 10
Applied math - No in top 10
Discrete Mathematics and Combinatorics - top 3
Geometry - Not in top 10
Logic - Not in top 10

So UCSD ranks very high for Discrete Mathematics and Combinatorics which is why it’s very strong in Computer Science. UCSD ranks better than UCLA in Computer Science. For math, UCLA ranks better than UCSD.
So out of your 3 schools UCSD probably is strongest in math.

Got it. Thanks!

@DrGoogle, have you heard of accounting as a minor?

It seems to have accounting as a minor, wow it’s expanding, I thought it didn’t have undergraduate business major.

:)
