UCSD vs NYU Poly HELP!!!

<p>Hi,
Im andrew and Im from the Jersey Shore (not a guido).
I am going in for Chem. Engineering and I did my SIR for both NYU Poly and UCSD but im still torn between. </p>

<p>Can you help me decide? </p>

<p>these are my pros and cons</p>

<p>UCSD Pros
.............
1) California (liberals, research hotspot, loose laws on certain things ;D)
2) super close to the beach, i grew up on the beach, love to surf and chill on the shore
3) ranked like 17 for engineering so UCSD diploma may = more job oppurtunities
4) sweet facilities and techy campus
5) crazy a$$ library
6) San Diego is beautiful
7) my sister may be in grad school in LA
8) seems like fun/hardworking students to motivate me to do well
9) nice suite for 16 dudes or 8 dudes idk freshman year
10) alot of asians. im asian :] ferrow yerrows
11) parties @ san diego state?!
12) free public transporation for students</p>

<p>UCSD Cons
................
1) 53k (no scholarship)
2) far from home (im from NJ)
3) ugly girls according to college p.ro.w.l3r
4) will have to make new friends
5) night life doesnt seem wild enough
6) heard californians can come off as superficial or cheesy to eastcoast people. im very "down to earth" so I dont know how id fit in</p>

<p>NYU Poly Pros
.................
1) 33k (got a 21k scholarship)
2) in Brooklyn (lots of things to do,wild nightlife, close to manhattan)
3) close to home
4) ranked 4th highest salary after college for universities under like carnegie melon and stuff
5) familiar area
6) small classes
7) have a connection to an internship if i go there
8) Poly will merge with NYU in 4 years
9) recently became center for some new york science department idk
10) already have friends in NYC
11) major is "chemical and biological" engineerring which i like very much (want to be biomedical engineer after grad school)
12) best friend and many hs friends will be staying in jersey/rutgers
13) i love the city :P</p>

<p>NYU Poly Cons
..................
1) 85% dudes. not cool!
2) ranked like 60 for engineering, not sure but its up there
3) not in the heart of manhattan but i hear good things bout brooklyn
4) small campus so it prolly doesnt have much facilities/funding?
5) not well known school
6) went to orientation and the students seemed weird, met a kid who got a full ride but was also a drug dealer, he seemed like a loser
7) wasnt feeling it before but the more i think abuot it the more i want to go to nyu poly</p>

<p>Will your family have trouble paying for college? Because you will have to pay A LOT for UCSD compared to NYU Poly. If money is not an issue then ask yourself which environment you like better? Which school do you feel more attached to? FYI, it’s usually best to attend a college that is farthest from home.</p>

<p>my parents make about 180k per year combined so idk 53k a year sounds like alot even though they make 180k together.</p>

<p>i dont really feel attached to either school but i feel attached to nyc because i visit alot</p>

<p>but i love nice weather too ( san diego)</p>

<p>why is it the best to attend a school thats far? new experiences?</p>

<p>As far as your superficial cheesy thing goes… Thats like me saying I wont go to school in NY because I’ve only ever heard people are extremely rude there.(yes thats what we hear about you guys  haha) So take that with a grain of salt because in places with this many people we cant all have the same personality :stuck_out_tongue: </p>

<p>ANYWAYS, If you wanna do bioengineering/biomed UCSD is one of the best schools in the country for that.</p>

<p>[Biomedical</a> | Rankings | US News](<a href=“http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/engineering-doctorate-biological-biomedical]Biomedical”>http://colleges.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-colleges/rankings/engineering-doctorate-biological-biomedical)</p>

<p>Not to mention SD has one of the biggest biomed markets (job wise).</p>

<p>“heard californians can come off as superficial or cheesy to eastcoast people. im very “down to earth” so I dont know how id fit in”</p>

<p>Dude, people are people. I haven’t met many people like this at all. Not any more than you’d meet on the east coast. </p>

<p>Anyway, UCSD is superior to NYU Poly, especially in bioengineering, which is its best disciple. However, you’ll be able to be employed from either so if you like NYU a lot more or if paying for UCSD is a stretch, then just pick whichever you like more. Have you visited UCSD? Another thing is that UCSD has a lot of commuters and is sometimes called “UC Socially Dead.” People tell me that if you find your people it’ll be fine, but you have to make an effort to put yourself out there.</p>

<p>It’s not the name of the school that determines your future, it’s what you make of your time there. One of my close friends is a graduate of Poly and is currently being aggressively recruited by some UCSD-biotech hybrid venture to help them with some of their projects. (They’re offering a pretty good deal in terms of $$$, but she doesn’t drive, so she’ll have to sit on it some more.)</p>

<p>seems like ucsd is the better choice, im just afraid itll be boring</p>

<p>its true that people are really rude around nj and ny lol, alota a-holes, and ive visited ucsd at night once but my sister visited for me and said it was sweet</p>
