This is what I've heard of the schools, so correct me if I'm wrong!

UCSD - strong academics, amazing campus and location, great beaches, perfect weather, laid-back attitude but classes can get pretty competitive, lacking social life, sports aren't on everyone's mind, school spirit....not so much.

SDSU - academics are on the rise, great business and communication programs, sports are big but not the best, people are happy at SDSU, close to beaches, perfect weather, beautiful campus, amazing social life, crazy frat parties, students are laid-back.

It seems to me that SDSU may be a more desirable school, but does UCSD's academic dominance make up for its problems?

Compared to UCSD, SDSU isn't all that close to the beach. You'll need a car to get to the beach from SDSU.

For most majors and particuarly for science, I'd choose UCSD over SDSU. But SDSU may have some specific programs, such as undergrad business, that you are looking for. And if NCAA sports, football, and The Big Game, etc. are important to you, State is definitely the better choice.

these two schools are rarely compared as they are not generally considered in the same league. for academics and prestige, clearly choose ucsd. i believe ucsd is the 6th or 7th ranked public university in the nation, while sdsu is a fourth tier university i believe. for fun and parties choose sdsu. choose whatever is more important to you.

In general UCSD is thought to be a far superior University to SDSU. This doesnt meen SDSU doesnt have some great programs such as undergrad business, but SDSU isnt usually considered by the same kids who choose UCSD, UCLA, Berkeley, UCI ect.

A lot depends on what you consider important to you in your college academics and life. I have one niece at UCSD and another niece at SDSU. Each is happy where she is.

The one at UCSD is studying molecular biology and has been doing paid lab research stints. She also has a busy social life and is affiliated with a sorority. After two years living on campus, she now lives in a great shared condo with a couple of other students nearby to campus. She will be a senior, and she's had a great education and college experience.

The one at SDSU chose that school because she had a strong interest in their nursing program. She also has had a great college experience and is currently doing a summer program in Australia. She will be a junior and moved off campus after living one year on campus. No doubt, it's a much larger school than UCSD, and it also has Div. I athletics if sports are important to you.

The difference between UCSD and SDSU academically are significant. UCSD is probably the 3rd best of the UC's, behind Berkeley and UCLA. if sciences are your bent, then UCSD absolutely should be considered by any California student -- the value of the education is top notch, compared to twice the price at many other private universities. If you care about academics, I'd choose UCSD over SDSU.

Here's some info. from UCSD website: UCSD received over 43,000 applications for fall 2006 admission (the second highest application rate in the University of California system and possibly in the nation). The average high school GPA of admitted freshmen for fall 2006 was 4.03 and average SATI Reasoning score is 627, 664 and 636 respectively for Critical Reasoning, Math and Writing. Total campus enrollment for Spring 06 was 24,703. UCSD ranks 1st nationally among major research universities sending students abroad in full-year programs, and 4th among U.S. research institutions in the number of international scholars hosted.

I am considering both of these colleges and I am wanting to become a teacher with a major in history. could anyone give me advice and facts about which of these schools I should choose, without being bias…thanks

for Teaching? SDSU for sure. That’s what the Cal States were created for… they used to be called “Teacher’s Colleges”. You don’t need the academic GRIND and sub-par social life at UCSD.
