i got in after being waitlisted. i am going for computer engineering, ucsd vs. umich, which one should i go for?

Given your handle, I'd say go for Michigan! Are you a resident of either state? Is there a cost difference we should know about? Do you love the ocean and hate the cold? All things being equal, I would recommend Michigan. However, if the cost of attendence heavily favors UCSD and money is an issue...or if you really love the UCSD setting (SoCal, ocean, warm weather etc...) and hate the Michigan setting (midwest, cold winters, no ocean), then the decision is not so clean cut.

plus michigan and ucsd's school spirit might matter too...

i know umich is a better school, i would love to go to umich. being raised up by the beach, i really wanna try the cold winters. ^_^ but i am in-state for UCSD, that's what makes the decision hard.
Alexandre, how is the financial aid for waitlisted ppl? if i do decide to go to umich, and i can't go to one of the earlier orientations, would that affect my chances of getting the classes i want/need?
thx for your response.

Class registration can be tricky for students who register late, but it is not that bad. You will still be able to get most of your classes. However, Michigan is generally not known to be generous, especially with merit aid. If you have need-based aid, Michigan will usually meet most of it, but not always. That's a tough decision you have. The first thing you need to do is contact the office of FA at Michigan and see what kind of aid you will recieve. It is not worth paying $40,000/year to attend Michigan when you can attend UCSD for $20,000/year.

No you don't.

Wait until you see how it stacks up financially, and then make a decision. If you have need, it's pointless to make a decision before seeing your aid letters.

I agree with Alexandre and A2Wolves

Diezel, I grew up in the UAE. Summer temperatures rising to 120 degrees with humidity well over 90%. Winter temperatures never dropping below 50 degrees, even on the coldest nights. 360 days of beach weather annually. I personally chose a northern school precisely because I wanted real winters and I certainly didn't regret it.

i decide to go to umich now, regardless of the fin aid.
i will take loans for the extra money umich costs. i insist on only letting my parents to pay what they would have paid for ucsd. i ll get ready for the cold winters in ann arbor as well.
thx for all the advices. i really wanna listen to my heart this time. i wanna be able to say the same thing as Alexandre did, "i certainly didn't regret it."

You know umichfreak, that post makes you one of my favorite people on these boards. I think what you did is really honorable and exactly what everyone in your situation should do. If you really feel you're meant to go somewhere, then follow your heart, and be willing to pay for it, and don't regret it. You're going to be an awesome fit.
