I’m from CA, and I got into the UCSD engineering school for cs and the LSA school for cs at Michigan. I’m still deciding between the two, leaning towards UCSD, though. A lot of these posts about ucsd vs. umich are from a couple of years ago, so I wanted to get opinions of the two schools in 2016 because I know ucsd has put a lot of money into their science programs in the past couple of years.
I visited both. Loved ucsd. But when I went to Michigan, I didn’t really like it all that much. I feel like I’m the only person who doesn’t like Michigan that much?
The only problem I have is everyone on CC and the UMich facebook page keeps saying Michigan is better for engineering, but I always believed UCSD to be the better one. Would I be giving up a really good opportunity by choosing SD over Michigan?
UCSD is very good in Engineering and CS (not better than Michigan, but certainly excellent). If you prefer UCSD, and I am assuming cost favors UCSD as well, then go for it.
You will pay 4x the tuition for little difference for UCSD in-state vs Michigan OOS. Did you get financial aid or scholarships to offset the differential? Seems to me that you have already made the best choice for you.
It’s obvious you want to stay instate and go to UCSD. UCSD is an excellent school, but it isn’t quite at Michigan’s level. It appears you are trying to have others convince you that UCSD is better than Michigan. Go to UCSD because it fits your needs.
For a vanilla CS degree, there’s not going to be any big difference between CS programs at UCSD and Michigan. For example, ARWU has UCSD’s CS rated at #14 in the world and Michigan CS at #15.
